I've spent quite a while making heatwave scenarios. Tell me what kind of heatwave you'd like to see, what month, what kind of temperatures, any kind of background information, etc. etc. and I'll make you a heatwave scenario.

I would like to see prolonged heat rather than a heatwave that ends with a huge storm. If I could live only one summer over again it would undoubtedly be 2018. That summer seemed to start in May!

June/July 1976, extended by 1 week.  Within this though a few July 2006 thundery breakdowns, and 1 of the weeks to ramp up the heat and humidity to August 2020/July 2019 levels, but then with 40.4C at least on one day.  A 30.0C+ CET day, and the month it occurs in being a 20C+

BlueSkies_do_I_see Interesting! I'm not a great fan of heat, but 2018 was a summer that I do actually recall with some fondness...my memory might be playing tricks, but I seem to recall that although it was a long period of sunny and warm/ 'hot', it was more of a pleasant, tolerable weather set up rather than these bonkers heat plumes that we seem to get these days. I do recall being able to have our evening meal sitting out in the garden for what seemed weeks on end...!

Can I also give a shout out to @CryoraptorA303 for having an amazing command of facts and figures! 🙂

SollyOlly Agree, the first half of July 2018 wasn't too bad given the humidity was quite low. Only found it uncomfortable during the second half and into August.

As for what heatwave I'd like to see this year, a one that maxes out at 25c. Preferably none, but this climate doesn't support that anymore 😁

A couple of weeks as a collective of 27-33 degrees low humidity from May to end of September with some thunderstorms, rest of the time 18-23 degrees Celsius. Nothing like 2022 though, that was hideous.

A freak heatwave + heat spike in the second half of May, like breaking a record for longevity and intensity

So far we have:

Summer 2024: Very hot, with the May record broken and three separate notable prolonged heatwaves. Annual maximum of 35.8°C at Coventry on July 23rd

Summer 2025: Extremely hot, the hottest on record with July being the first >20°C CET month on record. A new all-time record of 40.4°C recorded at South Farnborough and Otterbourne on the 10th and Faversham and East Malling on the 11th. Also broke 1976's record for longest consecutive streak above 30°C.

Summer 2027: Very unnotable, a single heat spike in July centred on Bedfordshire. Annual maximum of 33.7°C at Bedford on July 15th.

Summer 2028: Extremely inoffensive with very settled but neutral weather. Two very minor warm spells in the first half of summer centred on the Midlands. Annual maximum of 29.9°C at Coton-in-the-Elms, the lowest since 1993.

Late August 28°c, running through into September, sat out in the evening in the dark with the hum of combines in the background, harvest at full chat on a warm summers evening, then a thunderstorm of epic proportion to 'freshen' things up 👍
