Very modern looking charts today, could see surface temps of 15c later this month.
The winter ending in truly abysmal style for cold-weather fans. Even in a warming climate you get cooler winters so perhaps for a couple of years we had a blip, and from now on it's back to modern winters. I hope not...
-
It's apparently 0.6C here according to a local school weather station. Is it really that cold or is it innaccurate?
Hmm seems unlikely, I'm 25 miles south of you and it's "officially" 4.3c

Another rather dreary day today, mild, but monotonously dull.....I notice the ECM's thrown a wobbler thus sending the model thread into meltdown for the Coldies, but for me, it would take far more than one run to give me any excitement of a wintry spell, but never say never I guess?
I'm looking forward to the 00z coming out when it will probably show a Bartlett the way it's been flip-flopping
No doubt though the 12z will be taken as gospel and any future milder runs "thrown in the bin"
We're definitely due for a colder spell though. I've seen a LRF for the NAO which is predicted to go sharply negative into March

Off upto Iceland at the beginning of April. Wonder if a similar pattern to now may deliver snow at times. Sunset wont be till about almost 9pm by then already!!! May get to see some Northern Lights too if im lucky.
So from a selfish view, i can hold onto the prospect of perhaps a bit more snow. For Britain though, i do think the chances of snow in February are fast diminishing. A strong favour for an unfavourable pattern emerging. It sucks i know. I will go nuts if this spring and summer doesnt impress though.
That's cool. I definitely want to see the Northern Lights and I understand the next 2 years are the best chance for a while

Not been on here much in the last week due to the death of my father.
I do agree with the with my fellow north westerners, when snow is forecast they miss out.. yet when it left trouser leges down, the North West is the number 1 spot.
i've never seen so much rain in Bolton in my entire life this week.
i drove upto winter hill and the rain was in floods coming off the hills.
Very sorry to hear that, hope you're ok.

Ridiculous. So this potential career path for me may be shut off, purely because I might not have "personality".
Although I suppose the upside is that if the forecast is wrong, the useless actors get the blame rather than the real Meteorologists behind the scenes...hopefully!
It's sad state of affairs, but I think you're being a bit hard on yourself saying you've got no personality!
I heard him do a radio forecast in Dec when it was very cold and he kept saying he was trying to contact the Met Office to find out what the extended forecast was. Surely weathermen / girls should at least be able to do basic model reading!
Rob McElwee is the best forecaster, both informative and charismatic. But sadly the BBC want to shove him into the back office
-
Didn't see Midlands Today forecast but saw Des Coleman a few weeks ago.
I could not focus on the actual forecast and charts - got totally distracted by him almost bouncing off the screen
That's what you get when you employ an attention whore "celebrity" forecaster although to be fair he livens things up a bit!
Re the "winter's over" comments - the biggest fall here last winter was March and in 2008 April, so don't write it off just yet.

Today is a wonderful day, but I'm afraid from tomorrow onwards the Atlantic comes steam-rolling in with a succession of fronts dumping inch after inch of rain.
-
I just hope it stays dry now its less cold, still slushy snow here in Stafford town, nothing worse than rain especially in winter, so want it dry, I can never understand anyone who likes rain!
I echo your sentiment altjhough sadly next week looks anything but dry

Yes, the "Goldilocks" zone now well and truly out of our region.
Fun while it lasted, but that's it now for the foreseable future.
-
The temp has gone down slightly in Watnall although it never got that high in the first place.
I wish this ppn had arrived 5 hours earlier tbh

Premium radar showing the rain now making strong gains into the southern Midlands.

Over the last 6 years or so... The best snow events we have had here have occurred during March/April!
Thinking about it April 2008 was probably the biggest fall of 07/08 too!
-
Ironically the biggest snow event of the last 2 years for this neck of the woods was very early March for 09/10, and end of Nov for this winter so far.
I.e. not in the winter months at all!
-
The NAE is good with placement, but certainly not with type.
GFS shows rain with sleet on the northern edge (for us), this seems a likely outcome.
-
Felt very modern out there this morning, mild and wet although at least not too windy.
-
No, they're issued when there's a possibility of something happening that may cause disruption, so that authorities and other interested parties are aware of the possibility and know to keep an eye on updates and be prepared.
Ummm... that's effectively what I said
Even if it does snow, it won't be around long as the weather looks set to return to average or slightly above average levels into Mid January.
-
Well it's an advisory not a warning.
Advisories are issued even when there is significant doubt of something occuring, just to "cover their backs" as it were.
When (or if) it gets upgraded to an orange Flash warning, then you can get excited as it means there's a greater than 60% chance of it occuring!
-
I noticed when flying into Northern Ireland last week that many of the fields appeared snowy, but in actual fact it was just hard frost. I suspect that might be why some areas appear to be "snowier" than they really are.

CFS says mild second half to winter...
-
Awful forecast.
"Things are set to get a lot colder" when it shows maxes of 4-7c on Friday, which is what we had this weekend
-
LMAO can't say I'd noticed it!
-
You can actually see who voted for who, by the names on the poll it says "view".
Which is something I didn't realise when casting my vote...
lol me neither - oops!
I admit I only voted for Ian because his forecast stood out the most! And he's a nice chap really around the Midlands regional forum.
Has he retired from LRFs now?
-
Good effort CC.
I agree generally that I think this will be a front loaded winter.

Model agreement and continuity still looks very poor to me. GFS esembles are all over the place post 5th Oct. I don't think any conclusions can be drawn about the weather post 5th
