  1. Took a trip up Cleeve Hill earlier this afternoon, with a friend. Quite a bit of snow left up there from yesterday. The depth was very variable but on average it was probably around 2-3 inches, with deeper patches up to ankle deep and the occasional knee deep patch where the snow had drifted off the sides of a gully. A respectable amount; more than I had expected.

Looking through the latest GFS run, Cheltenham looks like it could be in for a fair bit more during the course of next week!!

  2. Thanks good.gif

No probs. I'm new to all this aswell!

If you want to have a look at the charts from the various models, have a look at Weather Online - Expert Charts

Select a model (i.e. GFS, NAE etc.) from the menu at the top of the map, then select the "chart type" (i.e. Precipitation, Surface Wind etc.) from the "Parameters" menu (on the left-hand side of the map, underneath the "Region" menu).

    Enjoy! :p

  3. GFS shows a rain to snow event for most of the South West from 00:00 - 06:00 Wednesday.

Back to rain by 06:00 Thursday though... However, Glos. looks like it could be snow, so could also be marginal for the Bristol area again?

Schmac what is NAE cc_confused.gif I have seen it mentioned several times,i'm still trying to follow what all this means. thanks drinks.gif

    Hi ya.

It's the "UK Met. Office North Atlantic European Model".

  4. That ppn to the west is not even getting past the bristol channel before evaporating into thin air. cc_confused.gif

    Yep... Not looking good! :)

It would really have to go some here anyway in order to settle/stick/pitch/lay (delete as appropriate!)... Was chucking it down with rain here (back in Trowbridge now!) about 17:00ish...

    Temp. is currently 1.5°c

    Dew Pont 0.2°c

  5. brightened up in bath now, light drizzle. Had a period earlier with heavy rain with some pretty big sleet flakes mixed in but other than that, nothing.

Been told that it's a winter wonderland up on lansdown though!

    Yep... It was earlier!...

The rain we had just after lunchtime made a dent in it though and I think the temps have risen slightly too, so it's starting to melt...

    Still fairly white though!

  6. It's now raining here at the top of Bath!...

I think the snow on the ground will be gone before long if this carries on...

Afraid so Mullender... Looks like yet again we miss all the action!

Glos. seems to have done pretty well this winter!...

I suppose there's a (slight) chance something could change during the course of the weekend to make it more favourable for us in the SW... Who knows!

It has been nice to see some lying snow today though, even if fairly short-lived!

20mm in Warminster 'ey Andy?... That would've been good if it was snow!

  7. Those are my thoughts and hopes too. From this it looks like it probably will but I don't know how much the precipitation with fizzle whilst moving back eastwards. At least it will be after nightfall so marginality will become less of a problem...marginally tongue.gif

Neither raining or snowing here at the moment and I can see the sun through the low cloud.

Yep... Pretty similar story here too!

Nothing falling from the sky and it's getting progressively brighter!

Looking pretty wintry though... Everything's got a good covering (but not sure how long it will last!)

  8. Unfortunately, I think the fun here could be coming to an end... cray.gif

There now seems to be a fair amount of rain mixed in with the snow...

    I'd say a 75% / 25% mix of rain / snow respectively...

Hope the temps / dew points etc. drop off enough later this afternoon for a top-up (and for lower levels too!)...

That is, as long as there is any PPN left this far South!

  9. Hi Schmac

Seeing snow now isnt necessarily indicative of snow later today as we see a temporary potential rise in dew points, though it should be noted 6z NAE has lessened the effect of the warmer sector by a degree or so

Wiltshire it wouldnt surprise me, however, to see a fairly decent covering as the afternoon progresses, it looks likely to be predominantly bristol northwards, however i would say this rule generally has about 25 miles give or take either way judging by the dramatic changing of precip positioning in recent modelling, so i'd say you could have a fair covering by evening

    Hope that helps

    SK

Thanks very much for that!... Sounds like a very marginal situation for these parts then!

Still, it's been nice to see the snow that we've had this morning... I think we've been very lucky in this area (probably due to the slight height advantage!).

Snow easing off here now though... Much lighter and smaller flakes...

Everything still white with a good centimetre or two of snow!

  10. Morning all

    Fascinating day ahead of us.

First thing to say is that some people in our region are going to feel rather hard done by with regards to snowfall, and it could turn out to be an M4 northwards jobby (in the non-scottish sense), certainly in terms of accumulating snowfall. Then again, today should offer some pleasant surprises.

The general scenario painted by the 0z NAE (and from the MetO warnings, i guess too from the 6z NAE) is that snowfall will start to increase in frequency after midday - by 3pm this afternoon the favoured areas (namely glos and s.glos/bristol) see dew points become favourable once more after a temporary period of warmer DP's. It is from here onwards I expect to see the reports of accumulating snow really fly in at lower elevations - it wouldnt surprise me at all to see a cheeky 15cm somewhere across the cotswolds too

For the next few hours snowfall reports will occur (away from elevation) due to evaporative cooling (in short the heavier the precipitation, the cooler the air becomes) from the heavier of the precip - temporary accumulations possible from this, though the snow will be more likely a little wet in nature

So a few more grueling hours yet for us to wait but by 6pm there should be some pretty wintry scenes for the lucky few

    SK

    Hi Snowking,

It's been snowing pretty heavily here up by the racecourse in Bath for over an hour... Everything is going white! Some pretty huge flakes too!

What do you think our chances are in Wiltshire of seeing any decent snow this afternoon/evening?

Or is it all going to be just North of Bristol?!?

    Thanks!
