    JH pointed out these 500mb charts months ago and I have used them every day since and I must admit I really do find them very accurate as JH mentions above. Ignore these at your peril is what I say. This pesky low isn't going anywhere for at least another 7-10 days so IMO forget about any significent cold spell developing before then.

    Offf topic, but I went in a hot air balloon for the first time about 4 weeks ago, it was a flight over the Masai Mara in Kenya, loved it.

    Plenty of blocking showing in models but all in the wrong place currently, this has been the theme for a while now, i must admit i am a bit iffy about any potential up and coming cold spell.

    The mid and long range met office forecast update should prove interesting today in light of the current model trend, fingers crossed they still go for a cold outlook :-)

    Yep I have been surprised by many comments of very mild next week, I see Tuesday and Friday next week as milder, 13c maybe, but other than that it's figures of 9-10c - not very mild in my book. That's looking at todays 06z 2m temps and the bbc weather online.

    As you all well know it's about as reliable as any other model that tries to predict the temperature months in advance, i.e. not very reliable. Putting that aside, whether it be a above or below average winter one thing is for certain there will still be cold spells
