  1. Light-ish persistent snow in Leith from 10am this morning - turned sleety as the front passed over and sunny now
  2. Woke up this morning at 8am to a frozen sprinkling of snow and abundant ice in the city centre. Sunny, windy and cold now - hills still white-over. Currently 5/0ºC.
  3. I've been wondering whether or not the MWW has actually scuppered what might have been. The pattern locked-in for the first 10 days of Feb was of a type not seen for twenty years - and had it not been for the MWW it might have stuck? As others have ably alluded to above, the remnant of the vortex and its position couldn't have been predicted but has turned out to be the least favourable possible in the circumstances. The synoptics of the last 18 months or so - had they been left to carry merry along might have produced more wintry weather - until along came the Stratos warming and the knock on effect on our day to day weather we are now seeing. Talk about ironic. Pure conjecture on my part mind
  4. Hi Dave Just moving this into the Weather equipment section. Read through the pages in this forum area - there's lots of info on weather stations etc you might find helpful
  5. Yes, as you probably know OP temperature stats in meteorology always round to the even number.
  6. Yep - best falls of the winter here as has been said above. The front arrived 6 hours earlier than forecast - woke up to a couple of cms and heavy snow all morning  Temp been hovering around 0-2ºC. Good to see the cold spell go out with a bang and not a whimper
  7. As ever with these affairs - my experience suggests the models are usually over-keen to ramp up the west-east flow and the displacement of the cold air. Might see something different from tomorrow's 06z...
  8. Yep - 'tis him: http://www.netweather.tv/forum/index.php?s...t&p=1403707
  9. The trend seems set for a less cold period to set in tomorrow across Scotland. The question seems to be whether it will go out with a bang or a whimper. A warm front is approaching us from the west - and models are indicating that this will end the reign of severe over night frosts and low day time maxima... But it's not over yet: Average temp tomorrow at 15h00: And dewpoints: The upper temperatures (850hpa) indicate cold enough for snow (remember -5ºC and below for a chance at wintry precipitation): And here's the 850s with precipitation overlaid: And the computer precipitation-type output: GFS 12z shunts all this quite quickly west to east so here are some charts for 21h00 tomorrow. And it's a story of snow turning back to rain: And that is the start of the medium-term Atlantic influence throughout the weekend into next week... One last chart - tomorrow 15h00 snow risk and snow level: For those of us wanting snow - one to savour for a week or so - before things change again
  10. However, the current radar shows that nothing is behaving as predicted by the models - I think we'll have a clearer picture around 17h00.
  11. When was the last time that happened WM?
  12. Radar currently looking interesting for the east - showers developing on an easterly over the Forth - southeasterly over Angus/Tayside and a northeasterly over southern Borders down into Northumberland.
  13. -9ºC in Altnaharra at the moment. And widely below -3ºC elsehwere in northern Scotland. That's quite something.
  14. This month's BBC Sky At Night was focussed on the 'Merry Dancers' aka the northern aurora. Very very interesting and a good discussion of the science of the upper most atmosphere. Was on BBC1 last night - not sure if it's repeated again sometime on BBC4? Most interesting fact learnt: The aurora dissipates more energy than all of the planet's power stations put together http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
  15. Had this little ditty emailed to me today from a pal - it must be doing the rounds: Funny in itself, but the added amusement of mistaking cms as inches is to behold
  16. At last - Edinburgh has snow to report. About an inch and still coming down
  17. It looks even prettier after a few Guinness *Goes off to look*
  18. Well well well. My pals who've been round for dinner have just left - and as Sammie says it's thick with snow out there... I owe WhiteXmas several pints, this wee front has certainly pepped-up and delivered the most snow of the winter here
  19. But this front is decaying WX - it's not an active feature growing in intensity. Occluded fronts are quite often dull  The shower activity behind may well be of interest though - not ruling it out, just looking for evidence. The 12z NMM meso-scale model will be out in a bit and worth a look at to see just what might happen overnight
  20. Here's the radar at 14h00: And the latest at 16h30: I think the phrase I've been struggling for is 'fizzling out'. Will have a look in a mo at the overnight forecasts - hopefully will re-ignite my interest
  21. WhiteXmas - I don't want to sound like a killjoy - but where exactly is this 'heavy stuff' - there's nothing on the radar to get excited about?
  22. It'll be hard to beat last Wednesday for patheticness Mondy - surely?
  23. Just been reviewing the radar and the ppn is demonstrably declining all the while - but at the same time the showers into NI look reasonably beefy. Could be a damp squib or at most, adequately interesting it seems.
