  1. Slightly off topic but I hope someone can answer me. Why does snow always melt on roads first ? I understand if it's a busy road, lots of cars driving over the top pumping hot exhaust gases all over it etc. But my main road has about one car every 10 minutes, and yet the effect is still much the same. Surely one lone car every 10 minutes can not impart enough heat in the fraction of a second that it covers each part of the road to make snow melt ?
  2. Now if only the big clump of showers would stall over the midlands and be fed a continual supply of ice cold air and moisture from... somewhere and we awaken to 6" of snow. You gotta dream!
  3. It's funny that yet again the models were not quite right with regards to snow. It has came more west than forecast, and the warning was essentially updated only as it happened. It's what I love about winter, so many surprises whether they be good or bad. Certainly keeps you on your toes.
  4. Heavy snow here now. Not sure how, radar says the heavy stuff has been and gone. Either way I'm loving it. Heavy and dry snow sticking readily to freezing surfaces
  5. And more snow ! Just stood outside, fairly moderate to heavy snow shower that is settling on everything. No cars going by and the villages church bells going off in the background, it was like some fairly tale land Everything has already got a nice sugar coating even roads etc. Surprising how quickly snow can accumulate given cold enough conditions.
  6. Surprise snow shower... wasn't expecting that. Even if it wasn't heavy it was REALLY nice to see non-marginal snow. It's freezing outside and the ground is freezing, so every flake has settled and not melted. Awesome. Now we just need 20x as much
  7. Hmm Wednesday looks like there is some potential for light snow in the East Mids. Certainly worth keeping an eye on it
  8. I'm sure there will be some surprise ppn around in the next few days that could bring a shower or two to some. We all know how unpredictable snow is.
  9. Actually on car roofs it was more like 7cm. Roads and paths are about 5cm. As soon as I drove a few miles north and got into the Leicester suburban area it was about half the amount we had in the rural areas just south of it. Very happy with the result in Leicester for once just wished I could have stayed up so I could have seen it come down.
  10. About 5cm here. Getting to work is going to suck. But we have snow!
  11. Yes light snow here too I guess I can stay up another hour or so
  12. Do none of you guys have work tomorrow lol ? Leicester just missed the intense band too it's north. But it looks like we should get some stuff in an hour or so.
  13. That big juicy band east of liverpool down through the peak district looks like its going to go JUST north of Leicester on it's current track. Go southhhh!
  14. Hehe. I'm not saying they don't know better normally, but even the forecasters are saying they basically don't really know where it's going to go in this instance
  15. Don't worry i'm certainly not betting on it ! I've been let down often in the past. But I don't think the MetO/BBC are likely to have the track and ppn nailed any more than the NMM does. I'm just looking at the radar and comparing it to the same hour as the 18z NMM, and they look close, so if I had to put my money somewhere it would be with the NMM, that's all. Certainly have no where near the knowledge of the people in the model threads, that's for sure. Just an IMBY opinion
  16. I'd ignore the bbc forecast right now. They're likely using data which is hours old. I'm not saying they are wrong, far from it. But it's a tricky low to predict, so there is still a lot to play for.
  17. Yes, but if anything it's actually under doing the intensity of the precip over Ireland at the moment (it's got the spread of ppn fairly close to radar). The past few snow events the NMM has done well and matched up pretty closely to the radar from what I can tell. It seems to have done better then the euro4 for predicting snow in my neck of the woods atleast.
  18. Anyone planning to stay up late for some radar watching ? I have to be up at 7am for work, but it is very tempting...
  19. NetWeather radar is working fine, atleast the Extra members one. The Raintoday one will probably come back up later in the night, it's more than likely down due to high load. Load will ease as people go to bed.
  20. Another heavy snow shower, re-covered the tracks in the road from previous shower. I tried taking pictures of the snow with my camera, but apparently the dim light coming out of my window is not enough even for a £1500 full frame DSLR. ISO was cranked up to 16,000 for a few shots, even at F1.8
  21. I guess it depends on your perspective. Quite a few posters here would consider 1 - 2cm as doing well... I certainly would
  22. I'm like a child on Christmas Eve. Even if it does miss here, sure is an exciting evening.
  23. NMM seems to have modeled this well so far, with regards to polar low ppn.
  24. Another heavy snow shower. Settling very easily, nice dry snow. Temp is only 0.4c here, can't hear any dripping when I pop my head outside either.
