Did anyone catch BBC's operation Iceberg last night on bbc 2? Of all the crap that the beeb churns out, their documentary's are some of the best imo. Operation Iceberg's first episode last night was awesome as they spent 3 weeks on one of Greenlands biggest glaciers, Store. If you haven't seen it, get on iPlayer.

Snow And Ice In The Northern Hemisphere 2012/13
Gavin Hannah replied to Isolated Frost's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
A very slight freeze thaw cycle will help the snow stick around for longer in the event that Scandi warms up during November. However, it looks like it's going to remain nice a cold for a while yet which will only help snow accumulate. -

GTLTW has hit the nail on the head. We need Nov to keep the momentum going so that as we enter Winter, we have the best prospects possible for snow and cold. On the other hand, if you are looking for warmth and a mild winter, you will be praying that the current setup will change rapidly to something more traditional. I.E something more favorable to an Atlantic westerly based pattern, or Euro high. -
Hurricane Sandy
Gavin Hannah replied to Somerset Squall's topic in Hurricanes, Cyclones and Extreme weather worldwide
Not enough variety on BBC news. There's so much going on in the world, and the beeb only give us something like 4 stories in half an hour, and then repeat them over and over. Gah, I could go on a rant but I will restrain myself. Have seen images of New Jersey levies bursting with some severe flooding. And there is another tidal peak due in a few hours. -

Ice is also markedly different. This years melt out has really taken it's toll. -

Proof then that the Beeb are notorious for "dumbing down" facts, and at times, getting them just wrong. Slightly off topic, but I'm quite fed up with BBC news atm. -

Well, I believe it was one of their weather reporters/forecasters that was on the news 24 channel spouting forth this info. -

BBC reporting the Eye of the storm reached 940mB. And that anywhere else, it would have registered as a Cat 3 Hurricane. -

Breezy point in NYC. 50 homes destroyed by fire. -
The sun today. No new sunspots emerging. Sunspot count could get very low over the next few days. http://spaceweather.com

Snow And Ice In The Northern Hemisphere 2012/13

Just a couple of pics from GlenCoe and Cairngorm to show current snow status. The Ptarmigan camera is offline so the view of Cairngorm is from Loch Morlich. -

Without trying to sound blase about the situation, it is probably the closest NYC has come to "The Day After Tommorow" scenario regarding the level of flooding. Just extraordinary Does anyone have info about the level of inland snowfall?. -
Model Output Discussion 26/10 2012 >
Gavin Hannah replied to chionomaniac's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
Well, not seen as many outputs recently, but from the ones I've seen today, 12Z esp, we are looking like being kept under a cool zonal flow. The 0C line more or less constantly covering the UK. A cooler than average start to November looks on the cards. -

This storm is going at a marathon pace rather than a sprint. Going to create a lot of havoc. -

Arctic Ice Discussion (the Refreeze 2012-2013)
Gavin Hannah replied to pottyprof's topic in Climate Change
The snow cover has been boosted over the last 24 hours. Ice as mentioned only making small gains. Could do with a sharp drop in temperatures over the pole. Massive difference in Snow cover over 24 hours. Uk gets it's first white pixels of the season.- 907 replies

Model Output Discussion 12z 18/10/2012
Gavin Hannah replied to phil nw.'s topic in Forecast Model Discussion
Tis very true. Overall, I'd say the model outputs look better than last year so far. As you mentioned, doesn't guarantee a bean, but I will remain quietly optimistic that even if we do get a zonal winter, it will be a cold zonal winter rather than last years dross. -

I think the GFS is going off on one with the 850 temps south of Greenland. That wee orange blob looks a bit optimistic. -
Checked the ensembles last night. Quite an impressive drop in temp. Even after the initial blast, it never really recovers.
