  1. I don't think the uppers over Eastern Europe are really relevant now to how cold March may or may not turn out. We could get a wintry March via northerly flows, in which case European uppers are irrelevant. It could happen that there are very cold uppers at the end of February when they weren't at the start of February. There is too much water to flow under the bridge. And I add that no one knew how cold March last year would turn out even at the start of the month. Having said that I don't think March will be a repeat of last year but it doesn't have to be.
  2. February 1914 was a very mild month with a CET of 6.8C The first half of the month was exceptionally mild with a CET of 8.3C up to the 15th. Tropical maritime SWly winds were frequent and these gave high maxima and minima for February. On the 2nd, 15.6C was recorded at Hawarden, 14.4C at Gordon Castle , 13.9C at Nairn. On the 3rd, 16.1C was recorded at Shrewsbury and 15.0C at Rhyl Heavy rain with thunder and lightning was reported quite widely mid-month, 164mm was recorded at Llyn Fawr from the 12th to the 14th. London recorded a maximum of 15.0C on the 14th. On the 22nd a deep low gave gales in places, Dublin recorded its lowest pressure reading since 6th December 1886 with 949mb The mean temperature at Camden Square was 6.9C (+2.6C) The Channel Islands did not record a temperature below 40F
  3. Look at this thread, it could explain why we have had so many months tending towards extremes.http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/79294-some-notable-months-and-seasons-since-2006/
  4. Pity we can't detonate a thermonuclear bomb in the heart of the polar vortex
  5. The February of 1923 was exceptionally wet, the 2nd wettest February on record for England and Wales with 152.7mm. It was also very mild with a CET of 5.6C There was actually little variation in the CET from November 1922 to February 1923, the variation being only 0.3C between the 4 months. The outstanding feature of the month was the rainfall. Low pressure was to the west with an anticylonic block to the east. Winds frequently had a southerly component. Rainfall totals % of the average England and Wales: 245 Scotland: 160 Ireland: 205 From John Dover of Aston House, Totland Bay, Isle of Wight. "February 1923 was remarkable for its warmth and wet. I have taken readings at Totland Bay for the past 37 years. This has been the warmest February and the wettest but one. The days of the month were five weeks advance of their time, while the nights were even more forward, being as those of the last week of April, or ten weeks too warm. The sea usually reaches its coolest point about the middle of February. This year it has not been colder than 44.8F on 22nd February. Only once have I known more rain in February, that was a rainfall of 5.07in. In February 1900. This year raspberry canes were in full leaf at the middle of the month, and gooseberry bushes in full leaf before the end. There has been an abundance of spring flowers, while the common field cowslip in full bloom every day of the month." 6. This was from 18 years ago today. Look at those minima, I don't think we have that widespread frost once this winter. Some places have barely seen a frost.
  7. 8. Up to 11th December, only about 6mm was recorded, so 98% of that total had fallen in about the last 7 weeks.
  9. The irony is that we didn't want the Azores high to ridge northwards so lows could go underneath the block, now the block seems to be disappearing and when we want the Azores high to ridge northwards to decrease precipitation amounts, it's nowhere to be seen!
  10. Well it looks as though it is the wettest January now. Just look at those that top the list Warmest spring: 2006 Warmest and sunniest July: 2006 Warmest September: 2006 Warmest autumn: 2006 Sunniest November: 2006 Warmest April: 2007 until broken Sunniest February: 2008 Warmest and sunniest April: 2011 Warmest spring: 2011 Wettest April: 2012 Wettest June: 2012 Wettest January: 2014 It says to me in the last 8 years, weather patterns have been getting into "ruts" or locked in for lengthy periods of time in order for these records to fall.

  12. Autumn 2000, I don't think this winter will top those rainfall totals at the national level.
  13. This sums up this winter if it could be transformed into a dive
  14. Maybe Jo Brand can judge the models, after all what they are all showing is Splash!
  15. If we start from 1st January 2006, so in the last 8 years, here are some amazing stats that have occurred that have either broken or got in the top 10 of long standing records such as the CET, rainfall series. I may have missed out one or two and it doesn't include such things as the highest maximum ever recorded in October etc. CET Seasons 4th Warmest winter: 2006-07 Warmest Spring: 2011 3rd warmest spring: 2007 5th warmest summer: 2006 Warmest autumn: 2006 2nd warmest autumn: 2011 10th warmest autumn: 2009 Other notables Coldest winter since 1978-79 Coldest spring since 1962 Coolest summer since 1988 CET months 5th warmest January: 2007 9th warmest January: 2008 4th warmest March: 2012 Warmest April: 2011 2nd warmest April: 2007 Warmest July: 2006 10th warmest July: 2013 Warmest September: 2006 3rd warmest October: 2006 8th warmest October: 2011 10th warmest October: 2013 10th warmest October: 2014 2nd warmest November: 2011 9th warmest November: 2009 2nd coldest December: 2010 Other notables Joint 13th coldest March: 2013 Rainfall seasons 3rd wettest year: 2012 4th wettest summer: 2012 Wettest January: 2014 Wettest April: 2012 7th driest April: 2011 9th driest April: 2007 Wettest June: 2012 4th wettest June: 2007 6th driest September: 2014 5th wettest November: 2009 7th wettest December: 2012 Sunshine 2nd sunniest winter: 2008 2nd sunniest spring 2011 5th sunniest winter: 2012 3rd dullest summer: 2012 Sunniest February: 2008 2nd sunniest March: 2012 Sunniest April: 2011 3rd sunniest April: 2007 Sunniest July: 2006 Sunniest November: 2006 2nd sunniest December: 2008 4th sunniest December: 2009 2nd dullest June: 2012 2nd dullest August: 2008 That period is 97 months If my calculations are right, I reckon about 1 in 5 months have been in the top 10 for one or more reasons. These are long standing records, CET goes back to 1659, rainfall series to 1772
  16. I don't think the Januaries from 1896 to 1939 were particularly snowy at times, especially between the wars.
  17. In the last 3 years since 2011 for England and Wales base on the 1772 rainfall series The 3rd wettest year on record: 2012 The 3rd driest Spring on record: 2011 The 4th wettest Summer on record: 2012 The wettest April on record: 2012 The wettest June on record: 2012 The 7th wettest December on record: 2012 The 9th driest April on record: 2011 Now a January that could either be the wettest or 2nd wettest.

  19. Atrocious, absolutely nothing going for it.
  20. Four weeks tomorrow, the meteorological spring begins. If I had a time machine I would bypass February completely. Absolutely detesting this winter, it has all been wet and virtually nothing else. Little frost, snow, dry days etc. Very mild days have even been pretty scarce as well. I understand people enjoying the lack of snow, cold and frosts but it beats me how any one can enjoy the rain element. I know certain members who enjoy this especially during the summer but IMO, their reasons for this are very weak and limp at best.
  21. Look at this chart, looks like a big bladder under those twin lows to discharge its content over the British Isles. Gives a whole new meaning to peeing it down. http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/ecmwf.php?ech=216&mode=1&map=0&type=0&archive=0
  22. Well the least wintriest January for years is coming to an end. The lack of frosts and wintry precipitation have been exceptional.
  23. The first few days of February 2004 were exceptionally mild with record breaking maxima. Tropical maritime air flooded the UK and in any sunshine it felt more like spring.
