  1. The Manchester wintry index is just 2 at the moment. It got to 20 for winter 1988-89, it was a mere 1 by the end of that January, which shows there was a bit more wintry weather during that February. 90 years ago today, the Atlantic did undercut a NE European high bringing snow
  2. I'll take that if we get a decent summer like last year following it but I'm not in the agriculture sector. To be honest I hope to see one decent wintry spell this season as I hope to see one decent summery spell in that season.Close to halfway point of the meteorological winter and I'm beginning to wonder even though I know from past history of even very mild winters having brief wintry interludes.I'm not sure why Scandinavian highs and their easterlies have had it tough recently, they have been brief when they delivered such as Feb 09 or did little such as January 2010. Our coldest, wintry weather of recent years have been largely due to blocks to our north west rather than to northeast. Although first half of February 2012 was cold in the east and south due to a northeast block it was too far east on the whole.
  3. Saw them on the 6th/7th April 2000. Didn't expect to and what a sight it was.
  4. That would be a very interesting chart in a few months time. Hot and potentially thundery but at this time of the year....
  5. Crikey, I have just looked at the first 3 GFS Ensembles at 150hrs on meteociel and the difference between them is staggering. Surely that is an error?
  6. I wished they showed more of it. Why do directors need to show the reaction of the presenters. All we need to hear is their voices, we don't need to see their reactions, let's see more of the aurora!
  7. I posted this sometime ago. 8. I know we are still got get rest of this season to go but what are the prospects for next season ie 2014-15?
  9. Just one observation Is Nick Sussex, the "Navjot Sidhu" of weather model discussion?
  10. Can anyone remember how last January cold spell developed, we're not heading down that route again? I remember ECM showing some easterly charts, GFS wasn't as keen, sometimes GFS charts showed very zonal charts and we ended with a cold spell for close to a fortnight.
  11. 100 years ago today, 7th January 1914, was a very mild day. Maxima of 12.8C at Crieff and 13.3C at Gordon Castle were recorded. The weather changed as a Scandinavia high develops A low pressure developed over southern parts of the UK bring rain here but snow further north. Crieff that was 12.8C on the 7th, had 17.5 inches of snow by the end of the 11th The high pressure drifted closer to the UK and some low minima were recorded Buxton and Nottingham: -8.9C Harrogate: -10.6C Newton Rigg: -12.2C The cold spell gradually relaxed over time finally ending on the 25th
  12. LolI know it got down to -16.5C on my thermometer on the 8th January 2010 but there are no official records for Irlam.
  13. -26.1C at Newport, Shropshire in 10th January 1982
  14. The three previous winters to this had their wintry moments but it was the first real potent cold spell since 1947
  15. An interesting winter 1953-54, December 1953 was very mild and virtually frost free. January 1954 started with a short wintry spell but it became unsettled with gales mid month and very mild, Kew Observatory recorded a maximum of 14.2C Then a change took place with high pressure developing in the Iceland region and intensifying as it move toward Scandinavia. A trough approaching from the west gave rain at first then increasing snow in the west as colder air was pulled in from the continent. The last week of January and first week of February was bitterly cold with severe frosts. Some minima Thetford: -13.9C on the 1st Welshpool: -20C on the 2nd Hawarden: -17.7C on the 2nd Ice covered or partially rivers, canals, lakes and ponds. 26th January-7th February 1954 CET: -2.5C After the 7th, the cold relaxed as low pressure pushed down from the north, ending the cold block.
  16. Wetterzentrale have charts from 2013 and that northerly blocking during March 2013 was incredible. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fscfsreaeur.html
  17. What about 1986-87? A largely mild December followed that spell during January 1987? 1953-54, 1954-55, 1955-56 all saw the coldest spells after the New Year. Some places didn't see a frost during the end of 1953
  18. Although the prospects of snow was forecast, this snowfall did catch many people by surprise on the 6th January 1994. A band of rain became slow moving in a line from the Wash to Hampshire, including parts of West London. As the falling preciptation cooled the surrounding air, the rain turned to snow and this process was fastest in the areas where the preciptation was heaviest. By evening, most of the Home Counties to the north and west of London were having heavy snowfalls and this severely affected the major routes in the area especially the M1, M25 and M40 causing travel chaos. Up to 7" of snow fell in parts of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The situation was further complicated when the skies cleared later in the night to allow the snow and slush to freeze. Forecast by Penny Tranter
  19. It's on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm on BBC 2 with Brian Cox and Dara O'..... 4th time they have done it. One question why don't they do it Friday to Sunday?
  20. How do you define "devoid of anything remotely wintry?"Does a single air frost or a day of falling sleet/snow nullify your point? We had a frosty Boxing Day morning, I saw sleet Christmas Eve. So it wasn't devoid of anything remotely wintry here. What do you mean?
  21. It was but really the proper wintry stuff unquestionably came in the second half of that winter and arguably it was an extended winter because that March was effectively a winter month. 2011-12, hardly anything wintry until late January for the south.
