Yes Malcolm!! We want the country to grind to a halt, frozen Britain. We want scenes like this replicated on the streets of London! (Hope no one got hurt) It's been too long. :p

southwesterly shenanigans through this week not exceptionally mild but a fair bit above, by this time next week we should be back to single figures. Uncertainty going forward, but I feel our region will see the return of chilly continental winds.

Nah there's too many cars, we want something more like this.

Exactly my point, I think most would be happy to see some falling and settling snow, doesn't have to be like a 2010 event to fulfil.

This means we only really need one decent day out of the whole of Winter to go right for us and off the back of a cold November and a cold start to Winter ( up to now ) I'd say slowly we are getting a touch closer than the last few years no matter what the models might be showing in FI.

Like many of you, I've seen events crop up in 7 days, 5 days, 3 days and even 24hrs!

Yep the best snowfall I've ever seen happened with no notice at all, in 2009. They were expecting something a day later with a front but that came to nothing but flurries.

A quick little community poll/question for us SE/EA Folk.....

Many of us seem to chase the snow, we want it, we want to see it, we have been starved of it for the last few years. In many Winters I've witnessed since the early 80's  we only use to get a couple of days of snow and if it lasted on the ground for 5 days then that was amazing, now from memory this use to happen almost every winter, or it felt like it.

    So...

Q: Would you take 2 days of snow this Winter if it means the rest of Winter bring us Average or above Average temperatures?

The reason I ask is we are only 6 days into Winter with plenty of days to go right up till end of Feb, even though we all know Spring can often bring good snowfall and despite what some say it can stay on the ground for a while even in the longer days of sunlight. I don't see the reason to be so downbeat at present. If we was already into the start of Feb then perhaps.

I would be happy just to see some snow land, even if it has gone by the next day. Haven't seen the hills around here covered in snow yet. I'm sure it would look beautiful.

A look at the ground temperature charts (0 to 10cm depth) for today versus 7 days time (12th Dec) does show it creeping up by maybe 5C for inland parts of our Region, but looking like even less impact for coastal areas. There's an even more marked variation in the Scottish mountains as they move from frequent days of minus temps to mild, so the frozen ground thaws.

So there is a negative impact (i.e. warming) on ground temps from the up-coming mild spell, but I don't think it would take too long to reverse this again - so maybe no need to worry too much?

Back to tonight, the Met Office have now issued a warning for our Region for tonight's fog, lasting into tomorrow morning.

Fog has been building here since night fall
