If there's an amber warning out for fog or ice, does that have to be given a name too?
-
If we only had 2 seasons - Summer and Winter - and they were determined astronomically, then winter would have started on the 22nd September and finish at the spring equinox
Although around here all we ever seem to get is Summer and Autumn ....... -
I actually find the UK press has got a lot better in recent years. In my experience the NZ press tends be the worst culprit at prefixing tornado with mini for no logical reason (ie yesterday), though they don't usually refer to mini showers, mini gales or even mini thunderstorms .....

Weather warning for wind today, where has this come from? wasn't forecast was it? The met office hourly for today is giving me gusts of 60mph
It's for the squall line that went through earlier and produced some tornadoes over Wales

Are you sure it wasn't just nuisance clouds?
Edit: Jo beat me to it!

So, if it 'doesn't have that much of an impact' (save for kids leaving school in pitch blackness and having to deal with tired drivers who are forever adjusting to decreasing light-levels) why bother? It's not as if anyone gains an hour's daylight, either?
We're putting it back to the proper time. The question is why do we change it in March? What is the benefit in starting the day an hour after midnight? Given the prime meridian actually runs right through Britain!
And if we do persist in changing it in March, we should put it back to proper time at the end of September- 1

At first reading the contingency planning forecast October-December seems at odds with their other seasonal outlooks, see link below
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/seasonal-to-decadal/gpc-outlooks/glob-seas-prob
So not sure why there is a difference (slight) in emphasis bewteen the two outputs?
"Raw data are displayed for use by international meteorological centres. This does not constitute a seasonal forecast for a given location."
The Contingency Planners takes GloSea4 output into account, but is based on human interpretation of that and much other data. You should know that
Also worth noting that the CP suggests an overall average O-N-D but with a warm Oct balanced by colder Nov/Dec.
Its why journalists should never ever be allowed anywhere near GloSea4 output!- 3

Actually they are later this year. The first one came out on the 17th Sept last year

Well I have known about ley lines for over 35 years.. I even used to look for them on OS maps
But the big question is were Woolworths stores all built on ancient sacred sites? :o

I think it was connected with the MetO servers going down - all just come back online and the Net-wx radar with it

Snowing in Evesham for first time since January 2015 - very big flakes but not settling as ground too wet
-
That shows snow 10 miles from Evesham. Which is about right.

As long as Warwickshire isn't the ONLY part of the Midlands with no snow, I won't be too fussed. However, if Warwickshire is the only area without snow, I will sure be bloody peed off with this erratic weather.
Don't worry - however much snow you get it will be a lot more than Evesham.
(Which isn't to say you'll get any, of course!)
-
Some of that will be snow, so won't enter the river systems as quickly, reducing the immediate flood risk.
But a lot more rain (and snow-melt) to come over the weekend from ex-Kate

I've known Scottish midges to fly all the way down to Worcstershire just to taste my delicious blood ......

Am sure there is a reason but it is strange that the solstice is only 7 weeks after the clocks go back which gives the same amount of time into the new year as February 10th but NO we have to wait a further 7 weeks before the eventual change.Looks like they have a better system in Canada,by changing at the end of February would certainly make more sence .
Changing back at the end of Sept would make more sense IMO. Changing back at then end of Oct brings no benefits (its still dark in the morning ...) and suddenly introduces sunset during the evening commute.

I find the word "denier" offensive and counter productive to any reasonable dialogue between both camps, just what are they denying other than the magnitude of warming being proposed. As for the headline, well its nonsense really as any such laws would never make it past the first hurdle gladly.
No, a denier is one who denies that human activity is/will cause global warming or other climate change.
Anyway, I'm not sure what is more silly:
1) the person who made the silly comment about making climate science denial a crime
2) the media for their misleading sensationalist headlines implying that it is a serious proposal
or
3) the so-called sceptics who are up in arms/panicking because they thnk everyone who accepts climate science wants to see them arrested and locked up for life ....
It's not a new Monty Python sketch is it?

If i were a coldie, I'd be reasonably satisfied with an average winter. An average winter in the UK is characterised by mixed mild and cold spells - a bit like 2000-01 and last winter, which had some decent cold spells despite the marginality for snow.
An "average" winter would seem like an Ice Age round here compared with last winter!
Anyway, a week of decent frosts and at least one snowfall giving day-long cover and I'll be happy. Get that and who knows, we might even get a thunderstorm in 2016 as well! :o

Wouldnt be any point in putting my heating on ........ when the back door is left open all the time when I am home
Storm naming - should the Met Office have named yesterday's low?

In the future, people will remember this as one period of bad weather. Some were affected on Sunday, some on Monday. Most people will be unaware even at the time that two seperate cyclonic systems were responsible.
So why not just use Angus for the period of stormy weather with gales, heavy rain and floods that occurred over the period 20-22 Nov?
I dont see how using 2 names would help in any way at all?
