It's a shame that next week looks largely dry now for the Midlands. Some charts did look incredible a few days ago, but they have downgraded a lot since then. Who knows, we may see some upgrades before Wednesday/Thursday, but it doesn't look good at the moment.

And it's over radar now bone dry for the Midlands. All eyes on next week now. I really hope we see something decent.

Snowing again here. Moderate snizzle i'd call it. It's light but heavy enough to look like fine dust blowing under the street light doesn't look like it will last long though.

Just popped down to the shop and it was snowing lightly! Not amounting to anything but it's nice to see. I wasn't expecting anything here from today, so i'll take a few flurries

What's it like in Broadstairs? My Uncle has just recently moved there. Bit jealous as it's dry as a bone here up in Leicester and doesn't look like we'll get anything

A very valid point.ย The real juicy stuff is well outside of the reliable at the moment, so treat these nirvana runs with extreme caution.ย That said, it's very rare that this type of output is so consistent across the models, so that does give more optimism than usual that we may hit the jackpot later in January.ย I'm eyeing Sunday/Monday's runs to start firming up on the micro details, but fantastic model watching all the same; which is why I presume we're all here!?
Agreed! For both the ECM and GFS to be in agreement at this stage is good. We've seen it so many times over the years where the GFS has gone for a beast from the east set up at only a week away and the ECM hasn't been in agreement. Usually the GFS then backtracks to be in line with the ECM. So far though, they are both going for the same scenario of a Greenland high. Of course this could change on both models, so caution is needed. I think if they are both in agreement for that at T114, that's when the excitement will really ramp up

It feels to me like, even if we end up with a short chilly phase and back to the Atlantic washing-machine's 'Rinse&Repeat' cycle, this has already been something dramatic and noteworthy.ย
Isn't all forecasting entirely reliant on previous modeling compared against actual weather outcomes? So the very fact that the models are converging onto such unusual and startling charts... isn't that already noteworthy, whether they do or don't turn out to be accurate predictions?
(Forgive me if I've got technical terms like 'charts' and 'converging' wrong... I really am reliant on those of you who explain your comments, and I tend generally to view the charts as pretty Rorschacht blobs... ย )Don't worry about not being able to interpret charts. I remember when I first joined this forum in 2004, as a spotty 16 year old and I had no clue about how to read Weather models. I have learned so much from people on here over the years and now i'm able to look at the charts and know what everything means. My family regularly come to me for an accurate forecast because of my 'Weather geek' tendencies, as my girlfriend likes to call them

I know us cold and snow lovers can't get ahead of ourselves with recent developments, BUT, it is looking very promising at the moment for established cold around 10 days time. As many of the regulars on here know, once you have the cold air over the UK, things can change very quickly in terms of precipitation, troughs etc... that the models don't pick up on until only a couple of days away. Having a solid Greenland high will be the first step to a potentially snowy scene for many of us

I think that's very possible. It rained here all day yesterday, most of the night and it's chucking it down now. More rain is forecast for tonight, tomorrow and most of this week, so I think we could see a lot of flooding in the Midlands. I noticed the brook near me was close to flooding this morning on my way to work, that will probably be flooded by the time I get home tonight.

Temp and dew points up to 3c now, so no chance of any more snow. Shame really as it's forecast to rain all today, tonight and tomorrow. If only it was all snow, would have had 20cm+

Had two heavy graupel showers here Not amounting to anything and the temperature is quite high at 7c, but cool to see, nonetheless.

Hoping for a dusting later this evening when the temperature drops a bit.
Well, I would have done had there been any precip around. Dry as a bone now

Just got back home to Ratby. Had to take a trip down to Northampton to pick up some paperwork from my old job. I was surprised by how little snow there was down there when I arrived at midday. Didn't see any lying snow at all. On the way back this afternoon, it was nearly all gone in Market Harborough and Leicester City Centre. Got home to Ratby and we still have a lot of lying snow left. Only areas that don't are roads and pavements that have seen the sun. Shaded areas have loads left. This was my back garden 5 minutes ago...

Very interesting shift at work on the railway today.
Drove the (very ) early morning Leicester stopping service. Absolutely spectacular, it was stunning with the first light of day emerging and snow falling heavilly. It was quite wild between Hinckley and Narborough and looked like Narborough had some very deep snow. Had to apply some of the safety rules we are trained to do when driving in snow. But thoroughly enjoyed it...my training in the simulator in these conditions had set me up well! We had a good, safe run in spectacular conditions and only ended picking up a couple of minutes delay. Though when you're the stopping service, your timings are for a slower run anyway!
Then in mid morning, I did Derby and Nottingham. The snow was beginning to melt by then but it was almost completely green from Tamworth northwards..could see very little evidence of any snow at all around Burton. Between Derby and Nottingham, it was very very patchy but could see higher ground in the distance still had a good cover. I'm sure these places had done well but it had melted remarkably quickly.
Then driving home just now, it appears that the Sandwell area and Dudley have actually managed to hang on to quite a bit of snow cover. Still quite covered down my road too.
I feel like we did very well out of it here in Leicester. Got lucky with that direct hit from the heavy PPN. It's almost all gone now, apart from shaded areas, but it's been a beautiful, sunny and crisp day.

I'm on the bus near Market Harborough and despite the radar saying everything cleared here about an hour ago, there are still flurries blowing around. Not amounting to anything but nice to see.

Bugbrooke brethren I'm glad i've moved back to Leicester, to be honest. Upton was alright but Northampton town centre was an absolute dive.

I know where that is, mate! Used to walk the dog along that canal when I lived in Northampton. I lived in Upton, so not far from there.

All may not be lost. A 100 mile shift Northwards and we'd be in business. Maybe i'm straw clutching but it's still 5 days away, so it can happen
