What's the point of the Met Office?
Woollymummy replied to Woollymummy's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Cool, good to hear it. I couldn't open the link as it was subscription only but thanks for spotting it, I was amazed they let such a piece of junk on the radio, but maybe they thought people would assume it was "comedy". -

28 September 2015 total lunar eclipse

I love all your pictures, the ones with the moon in the context of the landscape are particularly fine. -
28 September 2015 total lunar eclipse

Oxfordshire - nice and dark, but with a little light at the bottom was curiously better than flat deep red. My daughter said it looked like a massive translucent marble hanging in the sky. Worth being tired for! -
Where are all the wasps?
Woollymummy replied to Fourty Point Three Degrees's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I have had a wasp nest gradually building strength on my allotment all summer, they are living in my manure pile/squash and courgette mound. Today I was trying to harvest a random potato plant nearby their entrance, when I pulled the foliage away it obviously upset them and one just flew hard straight at my forehead and bopped me hard, and then flew off. Serves me right. Sorry wasps. I won't do it again. To their credit, they munch caterpillars for a living and so they are fine just as they are, as long as I can have their nest when they are done with it for show and tell. -
Amazing story! But the video not working in UK :-(

#NameOurStorms low pressure naming this Autumn
Woollymummy replied to Jo Farrow's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Esp silly if our storm is remnant of previous hurricane, you would have to choose a name which would become a surname e.g Bertha Bawbag II -
28 September 2015 total lunar eclipse
Woollymummy replied to Thunderbolt_'s topic in Space, Science & nature
I was keen in the old days. 1996, I lay outside in the driveway on a rug with a duvet and my binoculars to watch the whole eclipse at home in Norfolk , and got a great view of the comet too. I seem to remember it was really really cold that night (possibly frosty?), anyway, wonderfully clear. -
Model Output discussion 1st September 00z------->

Having left my spuds in the ground as long as possible, I guess I have to dig them up this week, rather than go off and enjoy the sunshine in leisure!!! -
That is amazing, is it very unusual to get that kind of hail in Italy?

I know where hurricanes start, but sometimes (ie last summer, Bertha) we get hit by the tail end of them after they have been round the whole loop. Is that more or less likely this year with a cold N Atlantic?
-
What effect is the cold N Atlantic water having on the hurricanes starting up, and how long might the hurricane season last if the water remains cold?

Have you turned your heating on yet ?
Woollymummy replied to stewfox's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
On Monday we had to fire up the stove to dry all the wet clothes and washing after Bank Holiday camping in the Rain. Nice to have actual heat again. -
It has been good hearing about a classic nice hot summer, did you get some storms to finish it off? We had a cracker the other day, no thunder but amazing rain.

I know this is hard to talk about with evidence, as I have none to hand, but there is something else which is useful to think about, and that is the daily lowest temperature. I have a feeling there is a trend for the lowest temperatures of the day to have not been as low recently, is it possible to find a graph to show this? Thankyou for all the posts about the highest temperatures, much appreciated.

A sweet little digger wasp, called a bee wolf, trying to get into a tunnel, it's already occupied by a wasp and is told to go away. I saw another one dragging a dead bee into a tunnel, they catch bees to store up inside the 1m long holes to feed their wasp larvae.

Tasboy, I was directly replying to posts #1465 and #1466, as there was a quibble about data between GW and MIA, I thought to save them the bother and to allow a better discussion I would try and find some information 😠- whether or not the emissions from Oz would affect Antarctic ice directly is another matter.

Some data on energy generation in Australia, in case anyone is interested. I have no idea on the validity of the data, I just found it on the internet. http://reneweconomy.com.au/nem-watch

Lay outside on the ground for an hour, plenty of big greenish meteors, quite slow and thick trails, a few super fast bright ones, and lots of little ones. Quite a few of the biggest were nowhere near the main point of origin, it was sometimes hard to get a good all-round view but it was more comfy to lie down than stand with my neck bent back that long. Good luck viewing tonight if you have clear skies.

While there is a lull, I had a look at Blitzortung pages from round the world, and there is even lightning right now in the Canadian Arctic. Isn't that a bit unusual? http://www.blitzortung.org/Webpages/index.php?lang=en&page_0=30
