Storm & Convective Discussion - 16/07/15 onwards
Woollymummy replied to Thunderbolt_'s topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Just big drops of rain, I am sure I can hear very low rumbles to the South East of here, how far do the lowest frequencies carry? More than ten miles for sure..... -

If it did get to Oxfordshire I was obviously too sleepy to notice, still am,I am definitely going to water the garden and plan a big picnic day out for today as if nothing was going to happen to the weather..... Glad to see the lovely pic from Channel Islands! -
My iPhone weather app says that Vienna temps will exceed Ouagadougou quite a lot this week (my favourite checker on hot weather being " does it beat Ouagadougou?" ) I love the thought of the long warm summer nights Carinthian, that is something we def have not really had this year here. Enjoy your beers :-)

I flew out to visit my grandparents in Santa Cruz during that 1997 El Niño, I wonder how this one will affect the desperate drought? http://darwin.bio.uci.edu/sustain/ENSO.html

Thankyou Thunderbolt, that was beautiful! It has been such an amazing summer day today, hopefully lots more to come :-)

What's the point of the Met Office?
Woollymummy replied to Woollymummy's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I was very sad to realise it was a stupid presenter poking fun at meteorology, I found a nice Horizon documentary on last night, repeated from 2014, which made up for it. -

Fingers crossed for you Flash Bang, if we are stuck here in the land of no storms, at least this is a nice time to keep in touch with the lucky ones who are traveling off to somewhere with storm potential.

It is good to read this, it puts our weather in perspective, I don't think I will be complaining about any of our delicious mild boundary-layer weather any more, the idea of continental oppressive heat sounds awful! Enjoy the beer though :-)

Weather in Siena, Tuscany and Italy
Woollymummy replied to Meteo Siena's topic in Weather Around The World
And another link to an Italian storm, the lucky things, http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/severe-thunderstorm-lashes-parts-of-italy/vi-BBlmLYZ Their CAPE forecast for tomorrow night looks amazing, when might we have a good hot thundery spell? -

Regarding the earlier comment about thunderstorm forecasts not materializing in the Med in summer: my friend just arrived in Italy to a stupidly hot day, followed by a deluge of enormous hailstones; it looks like lots of Europe is about to get a huge amount of heat, surely some thunder there as well? Just found this link about another stormy Italian event at the start of July, maybe more of the same starting soon when heat kicks in? http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/18846 -
Warm and muggy here, onions drying in the sun. I feel guilty for saying it is quite a good summer mostly.

Hi there, I just heard there will be a Radio 4 program on next Wednesday morning at 9, called "What's the point of.... The Met Office?" I thought everyone should know just in case it is any good. X -
But there's always September and October to look forward to.....

Model Output Discussion - 1st July Onwards 18z--->
Woollymummy replied to Polar Maritime's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
here's something odd: all summer this first chart has been the norm, very symmetrical, no wibbles or distortion. now with this extremely grim looking section of "summery" weather about to happen, the second chart seems to be becoming more usual. Why? Is the lopsided upper atmosphere causing the cold, wet and lots of lows, or is it the other way round? Please could someone help explain this? -

I was trying to read up it again, to clear things in my mind a bit, this helped, although it is aimed at Southern Hemisphere thinking so the clockwise/counterclockwise thing is opposite for us. http://www-das.uwyo.edu/~geerts/cwx/notes/chap12/pot_vort.html Hope that is useful -
The recent record temperature at Heathrow
Woollymummy replied to knocker's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Look at the other heat records round the UK for the same day. How many of them were near to an airfield, active or not, and how many were in non-airfield rural or urban locations? How many temperature reports were there that day? Were a disproportionate number of heat spikes from airfields, are airfields always usually the hottest, or only on really hot days? -
Today was incredibly clear, sunny, breezy, bright, warm in the sunshine, nicely cool in the shade. Reminded me of living in Devon as a little girl in 1979/1980 ish, same clouds and air quality.

What I thought was just a weird hazy blur in the north before it got dark would have been the ones then? I wish I has got up at 3, I was awake but never thought to check the sky. Now I know what to look out for. -

Woollymummy replied to Polar Maritime's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
What effect does the pattern higher up have on our surface weather in the summer? I was watching the H500 sequence changing from being lots of little scattered areas of colder air (what we have now) to one or two big patches of colder air (what we might have next week) around the Northern Hemisphere and wondering how those two different situations would be reflected in what we would see down below as summer weather. Please could anyone explain it? I am loving the warm rain for keeping the garden alive, feeling very much like living inside part of Kew Gardens. But I quite miss the bright sunshine.... -

Why are the 500 mbar anomaly charts never available? No matter when I check, it always has the usual message about updating etc Are they now only available if you pay? Is there another place to read them?
