  1. Lol that's about £100 / day Glad I never started smoking, this time 16 years ago I was recovering from an operation for testicular cancer, not sure why I got it, some ideas around Chernobyl fall out - I was out in the rain from it, but at least I know it wasn't because I inhaled too deep...although I'd need lungs like Sam Fox to breath deep enough to get the smoke to my undercarriage!!

  3. I well remember that New Year's Eve snowfall. Well forecast, I saw the snow come in from height, looking across at Coniston Old Man, it was like someone drawing a white curtain across the mountain, very heavy snow. I was newly single...went to the pub and as I was just starting my second pint when my pager went off for a search...on The Old Man! What followed was an epic incident where the missing couple were eventually found at about 11:00 in a very precarious position. Ill-equipped, low level of experience and just poor decision making came close to making the impressive snow event into a deadly event. That evening I believe almost every Mountain Rescue Team in the Lakes was in action, Keswick Team had a similarly epic incident on Skiddaw if I recall
  4. I remember it because the kids were at son's godmother's. We were in Bed too. Of course I asked Mrs C if she'd felt the earth move! Talk about old fashioned looks!!
  5. Apologies if this sounds a little naive...but if we end up with a cut off area of heights and PM influence hitting up against easterly continental air mass..would that be a snowfest or a cold, cold set up?
  6. Aye reminds me of the one we had 21.12.10, although exponentially smaller...https://earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/research/events/cumbriaEarthquakeDec2010.html happened all of a sudden....
  7. Temps just starting to wane a little, cursory glance but they're back -'ve at about -4C. Still a long way to go before temps back to normal range though....https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/overlay=temp/orthographic=-334.50,100.67,509/loc=-84.211,65.698
  8. Not sure if I'd rather the Azores High pushed on through and let the cold come in from the East or just bugged off NW and let the cold LP come in as a V cold PM shot...I guess either way could work out for cold. Question I guess is that although the ICON model is showing an output coldies could live with, will it verify? Those heights up towards Norway don't look that strong to my admittedly naiive eye...
  9. Now showing +ve temps...+2.9C https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/overlay=temp/orthographic=-346.56,77.89,360/loc=-83.832,63.381
  10. Been snowing here since about 09:30, but not with that much success to be honest - thick sprinkling with a touch of elevation, but down in the village scarcely anything.
  11. it's not so easy to find the warmest place when using a Kindle! -you're right - -3.3C that's pretty toastie for 10 Hpa!
  12. Warming up continues, now as "warm" as -8.2c which is pretty balmy for 10 HPa! https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/overlay=temp/orthographic=3.22,89.46,373/loc=-73.205,68.391
  13. That's global warming for ye! Used to be 14C and drizzle!
  14. Leaf wetness sounds like a Dutch pornstar...
  15. By head of weather they mean you need to have your head in the clouds!
  16. Ambleside v similar height asl as Coniston, snow overnight down to lake level first thing, but due to the showery nature of the ppn overnight it's hit and miss. Having lived here all my life ...that's 50 years and spent a fair bit of time driving about and / Or in the hills I reckon overall apart from extraordinary situations the lakes will be as reliable as anywhere in England for snow, even at low elevations. I can't think of a valley floor within the lakes at sub ~40m asl
  17. Aye in South Lakes we had a sprinkling, some places more than others. I'd say on balance where I live we probably have an above average hit rate for snow. Several minor events since last significant episode in March 2013
  18. Aye, there's a trend on the Lakeland Passes for folk to ignore road closed signs....Been a few ...recoveries over the last 3 or 4 days....that's caught a few folk by surprise!
  19. Warmest / least cold temp I found so far... -11.9C https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/overlay=temp/orthographic=0.52,77.49,377/loc=-65.012,68.190
  20. Aye well modelled indeed and looking at all the info it has come to pass...exciting thing to watch happen, but the downstream repercussions are the unknown. Unprecedented zonal wind reversal....all bets are off from my perspective. As regards survivability, just need a spacesuit....
  21. Well here's your split vortex now 2 smaller vortices with X polar HP. Warmer sectors (it's all relative!) Showing in turquoise...only -17C ... https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/overlay=temp/orthographic=8.09,85.26,218/loc=78.351,55.192
  22. Aye, split showing as almost complete as of 21:00z
  23. Here she goes....more defined split showing....some temperature differences but no +ve temps yet https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/overlay=temp/orthographic=-7.22,78.94,360/loc=-57.339,56.249
