  1. probably as that front moves through i would have thought... been a gust of 80mph at loftus
  2. Wild out there right now, wind had me up most of the night... gusts of up to 90mph @ higher points in our region, generally around 50-60mph elsewhere and slowly easing during afternoon but turning cooler. Some wintry showers overnight in to saturday... then potential for another storm monday followed by colder weather midweek with chance of wintry weather. Overall very intresting weather over coming weeks i would say.
  3. Some mainly very mild days ahead this week with the odd colder day... thurs and weekend? Main feature will be the wind this week along with heavy spells of rain, more so for high ground/peninnes and to the west of region.
  4. rain clearing into the north sea at present... more rain in the early hours til lunctime tomorrow and breezy followed by a sunny afternoon and much milder. nothing to extreme on the horizon yet either.
  5. Another cloudy, cool day here, some spells of sunshine around later which will lead to a cold frosty night with poss fog patches, then a very cold day tomorrow then all change into weekend with some places seeing double fig temps.
  6. Another cloudy day, but this more broken and allowing bright spells at times but feeling cold once more.
  7. Boring few days weather wise, cloudy, damp and cold... some brightness if you lucky. Hate benign weather!!!
  8. some decent size flakes now, shame its not goin to last long. as it is laying on impact with ground.
  9. Well its cold enough for snow IMBY, that line of showers pretty much over me now so went outside and the smallest of snowflakes blowing past lampost light opposite house.
  10. Foggy and frosty here this morning. Looking at the week ahead our chances for snow now look slim, systems pushing in from west dying out by the time we see them or moving north more towards scotland.... less cold weather spreading in by next weekend.
  11. this snow isn't moving any further east in my opinion... however much i would like it too. its going to slip south and fade tbh! peninne hills and an easterly wind pushing agaisnt front making sure it keeps just to the west of our region
  12. Think the ppn to the east of the pennines showing on radar is very high up in atmosphere and is acually fizzling out before it reaches ground as going off radar it should have been snowing where i just drove from but it's not and bone dry. I may be wrong though!
  13. You may be right but to hard to tell with the way the models are at the moment... best just wait and see when the time arrives.
  14. air temps, dew points and temp of ground surface all play a part in how quick snow turns to rain, just 1.c in temp can make the difference between snow/rain... so a temp of 2.c at say 50m to 1.c at 100m is enough.
  15. Just purely down to air temps being colder further up you go, snow has less time to melt before touching the ground. sometime just 50m in hight can make a huge difference.
  16. Issued at: 1215 on Fri 15 Jan 2016 Valid from: 1700 on Fri 15 Jan 2016 Valid to: 1100 on Sat 16 Jan 2016 Temperatures will fall sharply after dark on Friday evening allowing icy patches to form on untreated surfaces, including footpaths and cycleways. Please be aware of the potential for difficult travel conditions. Clear skies will allow temperatures to fall widely below freezing on Friday evening. Particularly at risk of icy patches are roads, pavements and cycleways which are either still snow covered, where surfaces are wet from partially melted snow or standing water and areas where wintry showers occur after dark. Durham, Gateshead, Northumberland, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland, Darlington
  17. Agree, areas east of the A1 should see some wintry showers after dusk into saturday, north yorkshire moors may get a dusting. not expecting these to be heavy and how far the blow inland depends on wind direction and strength.
  18. Very cold out there today, but how nice to see clear blue skies... weather models all over the place again, lots of uncertainty with regards to little troughs and the progression of frontal systems from the west early next week bumping into cold air and stalling producing snow in many areas. This down to a Hurricane around the azores interacting with a trough in the atlantic. So its a case of now casting for snow chances and keeping an eye on the radar if anything heads our way... saying this there will be alot of dry weather to with frosy nights and sun by day.
  19. hard to say but any where with alltitude, so zone 3 towards sunniside, chopwell area. think zone 5 maybe for higher areas (warden law) obviously i haven't seen what snow cover is like in said areas but maybe try finding road cams or similar in morning to get a feel of where snow cover is?
  20. Thanks, Know it well as i'm originally from pelton fell and have many family from stanley, shotley bridge and consett. Yeah we may see a few wintry showers friday into saturday then just very cold and dry as @Summer Sun says regarding next weekk
  21. i think the council/gritters get blamed way to easy to be fair. When you have hours of rain washing salt away... it doesn't matter when or how much salt you put down when the roads are very wet, if it then starts to snow heavily like it did it will stick to the roads and cause problems Salt needs to be drivin on for some time to grind it into the road and increase the freezing level of the water so it doesn't freeze as easy or melts snow/ice quiker
  22. bitter outside in that cold wind... so most of us have seen some snow today, some more than others. So what next? much drier in the days ahead but some very cold nights with in some places severe frosts... however we may still see some snow showers now and again. Friday into saturday a band of wintry showers moves south to the west of our region later friday, then showers moving in off the north sea to eastern areas for a time saturday... not expecting much from these two features but will be nice to see some more snow fall. then further ahead we may see some snow in middle of week before milder weather seems now likely to break through.
  23. bit out of me comfort zone this but i assume a SSW event late jan/early feb, more northen blocking patterns as the jet stream becomes weaker and displaced from its usual position. Sure there is many other factors and more knowledgeable people in here may be able to explain in detail or find relevant threads in forum
