  1. what do you expect living in the mildest part of the country?..having said that I think a few are definitely going overboard regarding cold and snow..words like bitter cold..heading for a deep freeze and copious amounts of snow..yes it will be cold but not overly so and a lot of precip will be marginal..plus its not a done deal yet..could be another 8 days or so before any real cold hits..if it dioes?
  2. I thought the rolling average for Jan is 4.6c not 3.8c?
  3. winters are very long..summers pretty short but both are mostly sunny..but you do pay with the mosquitoes which is a real downside!
  4. im sure you would take a.n Edmonton winter over a Manchester one...i certainly would take an Edmonton summer anyday of the week.
  5. not strictly true...the UK is on the same latitude as Calgary (London) and Edmonton ( Manchester) which isnt northern Canada
  6. weatherwise im going for a similar year to 1983 ..for those who remeber it..without the very cold Feb...cool wet spring followed by a warmer June and a hot July and a closer to average August..Autumn close to average nthing exceptional and an above average Dec to finish but not as wet...im basing this on the fact this elnino seems to be similar to 1982-3 rather than 1997-8 ..summer 1982 wasnt great and was followed by a warm Dec 1982 and Jan 1983
  7. possibly because in terms to other locations in the NH the UK winter is relatively short ie Dec - Feb some will argue you can throw Nov and March into the mix but for me and many others they are autumn and spring months..so by the time you get into Jan and there is no cold weather on the horizon then thoughts start turning to spring.
  8. what odds now to acheive the mildest winter on record...if there is no cold...then might as well go for broke?
  9. oh the woes of this forum in the winter time..roll on summer!
  10. were none before Jan 1940 so we are ahead already
  11. the difference between 1985 and 2015 we had come off the back of a very cold November and the cold was never far away ....even though Dec was mild much of northern and eastern europe stayed cold...indeed so much so Oslo never got above freezing from mid November 1985 to mid March 1986
  12. i was out for a wlalk today and noticed full grown daffs in full bloom..now i have seen the odd one before in a mild December but not whole areas of full grown and in full bloom...if i didnt know and you plonked me here and ask me to guess what month it was..i would have said it was either late March or early April
  13. Maybe you should watch Gavin Partridge excellent video analysing the charts and the winter of 1946-7 even he states its one of his pet hates when people say the winter didnt start until late Jan 1947..
  14. i asked the sane thing last year for a cold weather model discussions ...fortunately this year its been so mild the MOD thread has been quietly civilised and nicely balanced...much like it is during the summer..only when any cold appears on the horizon do the lunatics take over the asylum
  15. why do people keep saying 1947 did not kick off until end of January ...when its complete nonsense.!..sorry for having to keep sayng this.
  16. lets be honest when was the last time there was a full blown scandi high that delivered a sever cold spell with snow...i wasnt in the UK between 2009-14 but prior to that the last time i can remember was Feb 1991...it seemed to be a fairly regular winter visitor through the 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s but hasnt occured fully since 1991 ?
  17. Been there done that when I lived in Edmonton..Didn't quite look like that when I did it though.
  18. I think 1987 was overrated 1985 and 1986 were better than both 87 and 1991 in my book...1985 is rarely mentioned though..strange?
  19. In the middle of having my new boiler fitted so winter can now officially commence..ta very much
