Where did you get the info that a long term cold spell was likely?? I never picked up on that. Has been showing old for this week for a while now, showing back to mild till end of Jan and then strong signals for more cold into Feb. There were some longer term models suggesting long cold but there was no overall agreement in the models

So the air doesn't warm on downward slope? It's fascinating. Always baffled me why Windermere and Ambleside got such large amounts. I believe Feb 96 was one of the deepest you've had. I believe 79 was good and obviously Dec 23. 79 worked incredibly well for Manchester. 16 cm. They are once a generation for us Be interesting what you guys get this week. Let us know! 2cm here and I'll be a happy man

Lovely and sunny in Manchester. Possibly a bit of snow this week but never guaranteed in lowland manc. Noticed one day next week beeb showing 13 degrees. Someone mentioned yesterday that we still get decent cold spells but that when we have mild periods they often go crazy mild nowadays. Last winter we had 2 great cold spells with some snow but again, the mild periods were so mild we end up above average for winter.

UK winters: are they getting colder?

Not sure about getting colder. From 2009 to 2018 we had a 50 50 split of cold or mild winters. Prior to that we'd only had one cold winter in 15 years. Recent years trending mild again. The strange thing for where I live (lowland manchester), we have more years now where we get snow. In 80's winters were often cold but otherthan 81, pretty snowless. 90's probably more snow events but milder. Same for 2000's. In last 7 years we've had snow in 5 of those years. Spectacular in 2018 and usual 2cm otherwise. My point I guess is, why is it snowing more. Beats me!!!! Most have been Irish sea snow showers which in fairness always were Manchesters friend. 78 and 2010 best examples. The classic sw depressions moving ne which are great for South, Midlands and Yorkshire, are rubbish for those living in these parts. Sorry, gone way off topic!!! -
Totally agree. Parts of the Lakes had the heaviest snowfall they'd seen for many years. We're going into a very cold week. Following week not clear cut but looking above average. I've seen some negativity for Feb all the credible forecasters are suggesting good chances for cold and snow. Snow chances for NW to Tuesday. So the usual 2cm for manc. I don't say that in irony! That's actually decent for here
