    It's a pity the chance for retrogression toward GL is spurned between 138 and 168 with the jet just that bit too vigorous...having said that there might be some hope here in future runs with a touch more amplification to least make things more interesting. We have seen many times over the years the dramatic changes that can be picked up in potential retrogression scenarios like this at very short notice on the models just when it looks hopeless!

    A little surprised no one has mentioned NAVGEM. It's out on it's own but some height rises in the GIN corridor by 180 hrs on the 6z anyhow. At this stage we need all the straws we can get

    Shame we haven't been able to build on some positive medium term changes on the 00z runs today so far. Last thing we need is everything flattening again in to January.

    Some not unsubtle changes on the GFS 00z and the UKMO this morning by new years. More amplified and less energy through the GIN corridor. Might not be enough on this occasion but interesting none the less. Something to build on.

    Looked like a chink of light @ 168 on the ECM. Ends up just rinse and repeat.

    ICON Synoptically analogues of what we see at the moment progged for the forseeable are probably the winters of 97 - 00. That's the closest I can think of certainly for the next 2 weeks as things stand.

    The upper ridge to our south going absolutely nowhere. It is catastrophic for coldies and I fully expect at least 4 - 6 weeks from now to be knocked out of the winter in terms of any meaningful cold. Unfortunate but we are stuck in a rut that is hugely difficult to see getting out of.

    6z GFS not a rouge according to the FV3 run. Just a bit too much energy through the Atlantic. NAVGEM same. Not the best 6z suite overall.
