OCTOBER 2005 - YATTON, BRISTOL, NORTH SOMERSET A mild and very wet month after a dry first half. 1st - 4th The 1st was fresh and breezy with showers in the area but highpressure settled from the southwest during the 2nd bringing long spells of sunshine and dry weather. 5th - 8th This period was still mild with southwesterly winds prevailing but anticyclonic gloom set in. The weather stored plenty of low cloud. A weak warm front pushed through on the 7th meaning light rain and drizzle most of the day but cleared the following day. 9th - 11th It turned very mild and stayed sunny. A taste of late summer! 18C was reached on the 9th, 21C on the 10th and 21C on the 11th. The 11th was in the end warmer by 0.3C. This was one of the most balmy October days for over 10 years excepting October 2001. 12th - 14th A very wet day followed as low cloud and hours of rain brought flooding to many places. 27.1mm fell in the 24-hour period on the 12th. A two hour period of solid torrential rain led to roads turning to rivers. This was the same system that caused floods as downpours crossed over South Wales. A drier, fresher day followed and the 14th was mainly cool and shut in. 15th - 16th There was another warm spell over the weekend bringing long sunny spells and temperature shooting up to 20C again on the 15th. There was more cloud later on the 16th as a rain front followed. 17th - 18th The clearance of a cold front left warm, sunny spells later on the 17th. The 18th was cloudy with outbreaks of drizzle as cooler air set in. 19th - 22nd A band of heavy rain overnight 18th/19th resulted in 18.6mm of rain in 7 hours. A day of sunshine and showers followed. The showers turned very heavy by the afternoon with a short thunderstorm over Bristol with 2 CC strikes and 1 CG strikes. There were five claps of thunder. The whole 24-hour period received 26.4mm, a further 8.8mm falling in the showers. There were further scattered downpours on the 20th, some heavy. The 21st was overall very wet and windy with the first high winds of the season. Heavy rain fell for the majority and gusts exceeded 40MPH. The 22nd was then dry, sunny and quite with temperatures in the mid-teens. 23rd - 27th There were torrential, thundery showers on the 23rd and slow moving downpours for much of the day resulting in an extra 15.6mm followed by more rain and wind and some very heavy bursts of rain on the 24th as another 11mm fell. After some early showers and overnight heavy rain, the 25th was dry, bright and blustery with gusts of 38MPH. 15.2mm fell in the period from 18.00(24th)-18.00(25th). There were scattered light drizzle showers on the 26th and rather dull skies but a lovely sunset. The 27th was another very balmy day with 21C recorded. It was only -0.1C less than the 11th and 0.1C more than the 15th. The BBC claimed it was the warmest 27th of October ever recorded and the warmest October day in the country since 117 years ago. 28th - 31st The end of the month heralded some rather windy and wet conditions and noticeably cooler temperatures. There were frequent heavy downpours on the 28th and a weak weather front passed later in the evening on the 29th. The 30th had further heavy, blustery showers and after a dry start, the 31st had scattered very heavy hail showers with thunder and lightning in Bristol in the evening. So October technically went out with a bang. 1st 6.5 12.8 2nd 0.0 13.7 3rd 0.3 11.2 4th 0.0 13.8 5th 0.0 11.5 6th 0.0 13.9 7th 5.2 13.9 8th 0.5 14.4 9th 0.0 14.4 10th 0.0 16.4 11th 0.0 16.7 12th 27.1 13.9 13th 2.6 12.8 14th 0.0 11.4 15th 0.0 16.5 16th 0.0 13.0 17th 6.7 14.1 18th 0.4 11.8 19th 26.4 11.5 20th 2.0 13.1 21st 15.3 12.3 22nd 5.0 12.5 23rd 15.6 11.5 24th 11.0 13.3 25th 15.2 12.3 26th 0.6 13.5 27th 0.0 16.6 28th 9.4 13.5 29th 1.5 13.6 30th 7.6 11.9 31st 3.4 12.2 Total Monthly Rainfall: 162.4mm Average Temperature: 13.4C Average Visibility: Moderate Average Wind Speed: 8.8MPH Average Wind Direction: WSW Frosts: 0 Thunderstorms: 2 Wettest Days in order: 12th, 19th, 23rd Milder and wetter than average.
