  1. Yup that jet stream is coming all the way from the south and warming up Alaska nicely
  2. Tomorrow may be a temporary blip on the stats at maybe -1oC high and a few cm's of snow tonight but then another week of above freezing temperatures as high as 10oC. Loving this winter. Especially if you look at my signature - last winter was a very different story
  3. If anyone's interested its been the warmest winter in the 10 years since I have been here in the Rockies in Canada. Other than 3 days of -30oC in December its generally been above freezing. It hasn't dropped below freezing in 3 days at night and been close to double figures during the day. We have grass visible in the yard and at 4300 ft ASL....its quite remarkable.
  4. It was 8oC here and so warm - went to the gym in my shorts - however we did had a few trees down as we had a really bad wind storm last night. One was blocking the road the next road down and another tree fallen on someones car - ouch.
  5. I think you're on crack....no such temp existed. It was 3oC in NY and def not 27oC in the Bronx. Weather History for Central Park, NY Friday, January 10, 2014 — View Current Weather Conditions Friday, January 10, 2014 Actual Mean Temperature 1 °C Max Temperature 3 °C Min Temperature -1 °C Gust Speed 18 km/h Visibility 6 kilometers Events Rain , Snow T = Trace of Precipitation, MM = Missing Value Source: NWS Daily Summary
  6. I had 9oC to -18oC in a few hours last week. pretty standard round these parts and no news reports Its cold in the US....pretty standard for these parts and no news reports lol ;-)
  7. Need help? In the United Kingdom, call 08457 90 90 90 Samaritans Thats for the likes of Steve Murr and followers who have had just the cr@piest day. To avoid disappointment I cover my eyes with bakewell tarts and pretend I have the devil in me. But that's because I live in Canada and get too much snow.
  8. yeah it looks like they downgraded....maybe 10cm's here as strong northeast winds will surely help with upsloping. I am pikcing the inlaws up from calgary airport at 7pm so hoping the worst of it is over by then
  9. well looks loike another round is forecast for wednesday - 20cm's forecast here. Not sure where they are getting those totals from as only a cold front coming through
  10. It hit 7oC yesterday and we had a very strong chinook. Winds I would estimate at times gusting 40/50mph. Anyway last night the snow dumped in a few hours and we ended up with 2-3 new inches of snow and 14cm's at Sunshine. Nice surprise. CM - I saw heavy purples on the radar in a thin band of snow and a flash warning for calgary for over 10 cm's in a few hours for select areas. Did you get it?
  11. That last webcam really shows the storms strength, low visibility and heavy snow. Nice
  12. I can only imagine they were covered head to toe in fur and this is a coal mining town and was founded in the late 1800's so coal was def the order of the day.
  13. Great - I've gotta travel to Calgary tomorrow for meetings in downtown. Nice and clear here, we havent really had much snow in about 3-4 weeks now as the big storm missed us last week. If it warms up to any degree we could see a brown christmas at this rate....first one since 2005.
  14. Huge snowstorm right now in Philadelphia. Watching the Lions/Eagles NFL football game and the snow is insane
  15. As a strong storm came through at the weekend it also introduced an arctic high with bitterly cold temperatures. This week we have not got above -25oC and night time has been around -32oC. Tonight the temperature has really taken a tumble and at 11:20pm tonight its currently -37oC. The record low here is -42oC set in Dec 2008. Will we break it? I guess we will know in 12 hours. What does it feel like? Imagine opening the freezer and that feeling of cold air for a second...that's every hour of every day outside. Cars need to be plugged in to prevent freezing, heating is going 24/7 and simple things like popping from the car to the shops takes an effort. Houses are warm, work is warm, cars, eventually, get warm but outside activity stops. Its an unforgiving lifestyle in the Canadian arctic environment. Light is at the end of the tunnel though....-5oC by next Monday? Shorts will be the order of the day then. Stay warm!
  16. Oh yeah I've seen many pics of houses and cars buried. You got it bad. Funny cos we had nothing here in Canmore. Very lucky
  17. I went to Vegas for New Years 2010/11 and day time temps were 1oC and snow on the day we left. It was 4oC back home in Canada...ironic I thought
  18. Yes fairly chilly here today....at 8:42am on way to work was -32oC with a very slight wind chill making it feel like -36oC.....as CM stated some even colder air around the province.
  19. That's an interesting question. I don't the actual laws but to answer it straight I have never seen anyone do it. The ploughs come round and clear the roads but also the sidewalks so there is never really too much snow on the ground where you walk or drive. We have trails all around town where you can cross country ski but with regards to getting around I pretty much wear trainers/shows all year or if I'm out early before the sidewalk ploughs then some winter boots. There is a law that all house owners who have a public sidewalk in front of their house have to clear it within 24 hours of face apossible fine. This way it keeps everything open to foot traffic. Kinda neat. Even when we had 2 feet in 24 hours back in '08 by afternoon roads were ploughed, sidewalks cleared and people where getting around. Its pretty impressive :-) The snow is taken off out of town once the large piles build up, plus it still melts even if below feezing as its very dry and the sun can still be strong enough to do that, which is interesting.
  20. I think you will miss the cold cold arctic air as it looks set to move east from the weekend. If I had to guess maybe -5oC daytime highs and sunny with a small chance of snow unless a pacific low comes through then lots of snow :-) good skiing now though
  21. I just looked at it - looks awesome and just realized the snow has picked up a bit. Its def wintry but nice and warm indoors :-)
