  1. Yes don't think cold will be far away. May end up under a high pressure situation with cold nights. I think any cold will probably come from the east next time around. Still lying snow here in the higher ground of Tyne and Wear so not a bad little cold spell all in all. Certainly better than anything past couple of years.
  2. Not a bad little cold spell here. Lying snow since Thursday now. Think we will see heights rise to our north east again by months end and we will see the cold return from the east as the ECMWF run hints at in the later stages. Also don't think the temps will warm up later this week to what we were experiencing in Dec. Probably return to average temps then possible gradual cool down from the east heading into Feb. Interesting model watching ahead.
  3. Interesting UKMO at 144hrs. Await ECMWF with interest. Does look like the cold/cool spell will last into next week.
  4. Been skiing in the 'Scottish Alps' the past couple of days. I skied Glenshee in the Highlands yesterday and today and the conditions were fantastic, certainly on par with Morzine where I skied in February. Good snow and sunny skies gave me an excellent couple of days and with cool temps continuing in the forecast I would advise anybody who enjoys skiing and has a couple of days free to get up there and make the most of the snow. The club ski tows in the north of England have still got good conditions and are certainly worth a day out. You can enjoy good skiing in this country at the minute you don't have to go abroad.
  5. Been skiing at Glenshee for the past couple of days. Blue sky and good snow meant brilliant conditions. The pistes were prepared fantastic. The conditions were certainly on par with Morzine where I skied in February.
  6. Couple of cms here the most I've seen from this cold spell apart from in Newton Aycliffe on the night of Sunday 17th where a there was a couple of inches of wet snow.
  7. I am getting a bit sick of the continuous cold weather and would enjoy some warmth however I don't know why some people post pointless random charts, or bleet on about warm weather on the horizon when it's not the case. The term 'broken record' comes to mind.
  8. My opinion exactly. I think some people just post for posting's sake. The effects of the late cold spell for me are a couple of days skiing up at Glenshee next week (just booked). !!!
  9. Snow in October, cold first half to December, two weeks of lying snow in January with a snowy breakdown, two notable snowfalls in February and so far a cold and snowy March ( Lying snow as i speak in co.durham 0
  10. Snowing lighlty in Gateshead. Very strange as wasn't expecting much looking at the radar. Wasn't much... just a few flakes.
  11. Got back from Morzine in France on Saturday. Had an excellent week and the conditions were fantastic although it was pretty cold the last couple of days. Would highly recommend the Portes du Soleil especially for mixed ability groups as there really is something for everyone. Enough to keep good skiers happy but lots of lovely cruising blues and reds for those of less ability. I found the ski area much better than La Plagne and probably on par with the Three Valleys.
  12. Because everybody in the north east are lazy, council house owning wasters ??? What rubbish !!! Is it only the people in the south east who pay tax ??? Well I've just came back from skiing in France and was suprised to find a good couple of inches here. After looking at the models (sad whilst on holiday I know) I thought that maybe it would be just the south east that saw any of the white stuff. It does seem to be your turn now though with a steady stream of showers heading for Kent. What are peoples depths and has anyone any photos ? Then again if you lot get more than a dusting tonight and tomorrow you will probably all grind to a halt and start phoning work on monday morning saying you can't get the car off the drive (Only joking but everybody can have a prejudice about people from a certain region but I suppose its always the case that you don't see/hear the silent majority)
  13. Just back from skiing in France. Around 2 inches here in Gateshead and the side roads are pretty bad for driving. Didn't expect to come back to this.
  14. It was suprising how snowy it actually got here in Gateshead. I was expecting a non-event but the snow was heavy and lasted from about 11am till 5pm. It blew around in the wind and small drifts started to form. After years of non-event frontal snowfalls (Dec 2008 and Mar 2006 notable exceptions) we have now had two this winter which have delivered the goods. It's still my least favourite type of snowfall as it usually gets washed away the next day.
  15. No tone intended I'm sorry if it came across that way I was just explaining how conditions are mainly influenced by where the air is sourced from and how the surface wind direction can sometimes be misleading.. I havn't checked the weather forecast for later next week but it would be nice to have some fresh powder to ski in when I'm in Morzine !
  16. Here is an example of the surface winds being easterly but they are sourced from the south (Mediterranean). Another example, 'eded' notice how the winds at the surface are from the east but the air source is from the south. The chart I posted earlier was not something that I thought was going to happen it was merely an example of a synoptic pattern.
  17. Well go back and find a chart in the archives there are plenty of examples of a similar setup.
  18. This setup would bring the cold calm conditions I wrote about as the air source is from Central Europe/Russia. Yes you are correct that there can be low pressure systems which do bring easterly winds for the Alps but the air is sourced from the south.
  19. Generally cold and dry conditions prevail in the Alps when an easterly is prevalent. I'm off to Morzine next week and conditions look excellent, I can't wait !!! The Alps seem to be having an amazing season with lots of snow even for the lower resorts.
  20. They do if you read a bit further. I am sure statistically your more likely to see a white Easter than a white Christmas.
  21. Yes there has been some heavy snow showers here in Gateshead which tried to settle at times but quickly melted soon afterwards.
  22. Not sure whether this is in the right thread but where can I get a list of monthly CET's ?
