  2. I live in hope that I will be in neither of the clubs this year especially the no storms club again grrrr. Good luck though everyone . Bring on the snow I'm sure we may see a flake or two through winter Yay.
  3. Hi all After having a couple of requests to start a 'No Snow club' I've decided to open one here. Although the snow hasen't reached most of us yet , there is a chance that something may be heading our way tomorrow night and then into next week and if for some reason it dosen't happen IYBY it's surely gonna feel like the end of the world . So please feel free to rant, rave, moan and cry here if no snow decides to visit you this winter.....
  4. New thread here folks and please keep on topic as much as possible. Thanks and good luck.
  5. Hi all, At this precise moment the birds are going mad on the feeders. I guess they can sense the cold spell and snow on its way. The Starlings as usual are quite comical due to trying to hold onto a feeder and as always- falling off The starlings are still a gathering at 4pm for their fascinating murmurations. The Blackcap has returned early this morning after hiding away for 2 weeks. The Blackbird, Song thrush and Robin are singing their hearts out as though it's spring. Hopefully once the cold spell arrives it will make them realise winter is still upon us.
  6. And here's another courtesy of Simon Keeling from Weatherschool on facebook lol GFS Ens snow depths, 4 or 5cm of lying snow Saturday through Monday...believe at your peril! http://www.weatherweb.net/wxwebchartsgfsensuksnow.php
  7. Courtesy of Keithy Joe( Metmonkey) on facebook The risk of Snow for Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean and the West Country including Swindon is looking reasonably high on Saturday. Further updates will be issued in the coming days.
  8. Being born and bred from Plymouth, I only ever remember seeing snow on Dartmoor it's now 13 years since I left there. Good luck though you never know.
  9. Can't see how many either qg, I expect there's probably more then 1300 Lol
  10. New thread here folks, Its really looking exciting now. Fingers crossed for all .
  11. Ooooh dear! we best start looking for bargains maybe online.I find Garden centers quite expensive so usually look to our local pet shop. The ploughed field next to me is still flooded due to the fact it's all clay soil. A lot of tractors going up and down the road today seen a farmer inspecting the field. Looks like it's going to be a poor year for farmers again especially if we have another wet year!
  12. Ahhh yes, I'm going to stock up to especially with this cold spell on it's way.
  13. Yes, definitely looking forward to SpringI am now rethinking on the best place to put my robin box although it's stuck in a hedge at the moment facing East. The robin/s seems to be spending a lot of time under a large Choisya shrub so I'm thinking of maybe moving it there. My nest box out the front is facing SE and has only been up for a week and yesterday I recorded two visits from 2 blue tits which had a fight inside the box.I was going to move it 10 ft up a pine tree facing East ready for nesting season but not to sure if I should move it at all now. My 2 roosters are still in every late afternoon at quarter past four I'm going to start my nest box diary next month and look forward to participating in the nest record scheme for the BTO. Roll on Spring . Mind, saying that, we could really do with a severe frost before hand so I can sort my horrible clay sodden soil in my garden.
  14. I'm never going to get out into the garden this week.Everywhere is so boggy and sadly only just now I found two dead sparrows by the hedge I reckon they've probably drowned. Poor things. I try so hard to help the wildlife with plenty of food and shelter but I've got to remember that sadly I will come across incidents like this .
  15. Oh yes, we had mosquitos here by our pond. I got bit quite badly it was horrible. My other half didn't suffer as bad as me he only had a couple bites. We also bought a pond pump which helped a little. But it's these damp wet summers that are the culprit. I can't believe all this wind and rain we are having now in winter. What has happened to the frost and snow that we usually have at this time of year.It always brings a good variety of wildlife and migrants with it.I know we still have a couple months of winter to go but I've just never seen it as bad as this with so much rain.
  16. Hi cerneman, I have a nature pond close to a hedge by a field.I made this small pond in April this year. I'm hoping it may attract frogs and dragonflies. Regarding the wildflowers I know they can be very hard to grow. Certainly where I live on farmland we have horrible thick boggy clay soil which isen't very apt for a variety of plants and seed. But to attract insects I would suggest Yarrow which is wonderful for attracting bees and hoverflies also cowslip and oxe-eye daisies will provide plenty of pollen and nectar for most insects.Buddleia is a particular favourite of butterflies not forgetting cornflowers, foxgloves, bluebells, crocus and globe thistle. Wild Marjoram is a good plant for butterflies and bees as is Buddleia Common Knapweed Wild Carrot Lady's Bedstraw Oxeye Daisy Red Campion are amongst others which are very beneficial for insects. Take a look here for more info ! I found this site quite interesting. http://www.wildflowersuk.com/mixcontents.asp?headingID=10
  17. This year I haven't seen the Nuthatch .We have sparrows galore here, no sign of nesting yet. We have put a sparrow terrace up which my partner made but no camera installed in that one yet.I'm running out of TVs and computers with all these cams lol. The great spotted woodpecker is a daily visitor too.The pied wagtails hang around the back fields and my two roosters the great and blue tit have just flown in to their boxes now.I do have names for them but wont reveal Would love to see photos if anybody has any.
  18. Small trees starting to bud here already. I have now removed all my plants from the greenhouse and placed them back into the garden due to the lack of cold weather. The corn fields are flooded next to me so it's going to be a bad year for farmers I feel. Plenty of bird feeders are up. One great tit and one blue tit roosting in two of my camera nest boxes since September . My other two camera boxes are unoccupied at present. I have one more blue tit cam box and one robin cam nest box . I'm going to be doing a nest box survey for the BTO in spring which I'm looking forward to. Have only seen a few field fares so far this winter no redwings and sadly no waxwings. Two robins are pairing up but this is usually normal. My black caps have disappeared but I've been rewarded with flocks of long tailed tits who are visiting up to three times a day.
  19. A pleasure for me to start this thread. Studying nature is a favorite hobby of mine. Noticing the changes from year to year and seeing how nature differs with regards to wildlife, plants, weather and much more. Please use this thread to post up any recent observations you'd like to discuss and any noticeable changes that may be of interest to fellow observers.
