  1. There was no display in march 1987 not as I could see as after the march 1986 one first one I saw one of the best, I looked every night that month 1987 march but there was nothing I was dissapointed. March 1989 sounds exactly like the one you saw and yeah there was a gibbous month aswell that was a once in a lifetime display and one of the highlights ever for me I`ve seen as they could see that in africa and it knocked out a few satelite dishes out. :o
  2. December 1995 actually had the equal coldest night of the century at -27.2c the same as January 1982. So it was very potent indeed in the north.
  3. That is remarkable!!!!! I`ve never seen snow in september not as I can remember, air frosts in sept 1986 taking the leaves of the bottom half of the trees but thats all.
  4. For me my memory of that exceptional cold 1987 spell was a shorter lived one to feb 1991 to me they were a similar spell somehow, except feb 1991 was a month later with not as potent cold air less wind still bitterly cold though. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119870106.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119870120.gif As feb 1991 seemed to last longer which it did by 1 week. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119910125.gif http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119910214.gif
  5. The 12 January as far as showers were they were on the light side falling from just blue skies blowing in the wind small cumulus coming from an east/NE, during a monday as I remember with lots of sunshine extremely dry magical flakes of very powdery snow slow falling flakes, after the overnight snow and blizzard from 2 nights before. The amazing thing is though the sun didn`t thaw anything not even frost on a gate incredible that was one the coldest days ever
  6. From november to March these are the perfect months/charts including Blast`s from Feb 86 well it started end of Jan.
  7. Just to add I`ve taped this by accident meant to tape something else. Seen it again with the lights and yes it is speeded up with jerky cloud movements. Not all of it though Joanna lumley was great and she was really moved by it. Some faster than others.
  8. Thats how they look in real life, they looked speeded up to how I`ve seen them though, might be different up there.
  9. I`ve never seen them in winter, spring and autumn the only time and I`ve seen them and once in august 1990 that was only by luck red/orange in that one to the north. I liked the igloo hotel it melts in mid-april and the work that goes into making that after all that.!!!!!! Thats the key get away from any street lights in the country As for it looking fake looked at the stars which stayed/clouds they moved slowly.
  10. To the north of here spring is better for me to see them for some reason. Programn on now.
  11. Yep this looks interesting I havn`t seen a programn about northern lights before. I`ve seen them last time was on april 11th 2001 which seems along while ago now.
  12. No thunder here last autumn. There wants more detailed maps. Theres been a slight rise looking at my dates this decade to the 90`s, 2006 had more than most.
  13. We had a wet spring ground was soft then with springs of water coming out of our yard/ rocks, just like today happens when it this wet had 1 inch on april 30th from a similar tracking slow moving low to yesterdays and water lasts 1 to 3 days after it`s rained to start with about 2/3 times a year usually in winter, it`s a great guide to how wet the ground is here. then the river usually floods.
  14. It is a different scale yes. But it`s definately increased looking at those maps in the areas I mentioned. Infact that only goes to 2000 and this decade has seen even higher thunder days in the autumn with higher temps.
  15. Sun did come out briefly still only got upto 13.7c then 13c now and forgot to say it`s the wettest it`s been water table that is since april 30th/may 1st here so it`s very high indeed for early sept. A cool NW wind and still cloudy but dry at least.
  16. Warm where you are the pit. 13.2 here now and been cloudy all day no rain max was 14.2c so just about the 2nd coolest day so far this autumn and coolest day this coming week by the looks of it.
  17. Looks like thunder has increased outside of summer in september for Wales and Scotland. Something I`ve noticed outside of summer, but less thunder in the summer to the 80`s.
  18. The coolest day I`ll go for then as it looks cloudy with a cool NW wind. http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn3017.png
  19. That true as last may/June and July were the wettest on record then august was mainly dry with the autumn the driest on record what a strange year and even december was dry. although last sept wasn`t so dry here with 1.6 inches.
  20. I`ve recorded wetter septembers but this month is only 6 days young!!!! 1999 was the wettest with 6.1" Nearly had half that already with 2.75" as sept 2000 was the 2nd wettest I`ve recorded which was the wettest since 1981 my rainfall records go back to 1992 had 1.3inches for the first half summer 2000 was quite wet/unsettled. Unless we have a dry 2nd half. Every location differs of course. Yes daily/24 hour rainfall in summer that goes to last june and July here for the highest I`ve recorded 3.1" in june with 2.6" in July with torrental thunderstorms/heavy rain, pity I always say this that I didn`t record weather in the 80`s too young I suppose.
  21. I can`t access the file, but as far as rainfall being rare on a 24 hour event then no it`s not thats frequent, but continues rainfall over the period as last summer being the wettest on record was it not with the severn flooded for the first time in summer July, then this long wet spell for early sept then yes it is a rare event seen the archives charts and theres proof out on the rivers it hasn`t flooded this early before as I`ve seen.
  22. It was a 1 in 100 with last summers floods across the country, as for this in sept is getting on for a 1 in 50 year event for it so being early in autumn the severn starts flooding in november normally. My 90 year old Uncle hasn`t seen a summer like last year before. For spring autumn/winter we can expect it as the ground is soft but not now,it should be hard.
  23. This year does look to be a wetter year to last year which does take some believing after last summer`s deluges. This time Last year 25.4" final total 32.1" Same time this year 26.7"
  24. An extra 18mm last night which makes it wetter than yesterday. River severn has flooded with some corn fields under water for the 2nd year in a row I`ve seen floods at the end of september once or twice not at the beginning and it`s higher than I expected. Sun has come out and temps are higher at 14.9c had some drizzly rain. Wettest september date since 1999 and that won`t be topped. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119990920.gif
  25. Some heavy intense showery rainfall bands moving north... rain started here again after a dry lull with some mist. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/
