  1. Yeah some bright echoes appearing in the channel heading our way. Apparently same again tomorrow with possible hail? So you never know, we could end up with a (temporary) white Chrimbo if it hails enough! Update on the inlaws place, the river Mole is receding thankfully, enough for them to manually open the gate so we can drive in now. I finish work at 1 we're then taking them a hot lunch as still no power!
  2. ....in your location...be thankful that it has missed you, plenty of other people I should imagine wish they missed it also. I know I do!
  3. We've got 3 fences down in Tilgate (Crawley) and also got a call about 7.30 this morning to help my in-laws out as the river mole has burst it's banks and they haven't got any power! They live next door to the Gables Nursery in ifield which is inundated with Police adn Fire crews in helping the pensioners out. I had to scale the In-laws wall (as the gates are electronic) and help the Father in law to try and cran the gate by hand to allow the water to flow better and not break the gates, but there was too much debris up against them, so I propped open the side gate with my ladder so at least they can get out! The really bad news is that if still no power tomorrow, no xmas dinner round there All the food is in the garage which, you've guessed it has electric doors! And no way to open them manually!
  4. Very gusty winds and rain here, definitely getting stronger in the last hour or so. Maybe the crosswinds have become too much for the planes now? Wouldn't be surprised (only a few miles from LGW)
  5. Heavy rain has started along with gusty winds that are only going to stronger! Sitting here on the 7th Floor next to a window looking south in a glass building...I'm hoping I can get home before the threat of these windows breaking!
  6. Yes I just spotted that! Embedded within 528 dam, mmm I wonder where that will end up!
  7. You certainly can't call the weather coming up as boring Barry! Come on if it was showing endless days on grey slate skies and temps around 6 or 7 for a couple of weeks then I would agree with you, however we have sunshine, heavy rain, sleet, snow, hail (very heavy last night down here), thunder and lightning (again last night) which appears to be the recipe for the new few weeks! UK weather at it's best IMO Sustained cold and snow will surely come but based on current prognosis and respected long range forecasts, this might not happen until late Jan at the earliest, in the meantimejsut enjoy the weather that mother nature is throwing at us. We certainly need to keep an eye down here on the rain over the new few days as the river levels are pretty high, let alone the wind!
  8. I wonder whether the nudging of the Arctic High South Eastwards on the UKMO @ 144 is something to hang onto (from a coldie perspective) Be interesting to see if it's still there shortly
  9. The only saving grace for the charts leading up to Xmas is the Jan 1984 look of the charts, those are some very low temps being shown in the upper air so it's possible that with a few tweaks, we could see some wintry weather down here!
  10. Yeah and the jet is not going away anytime soon! That really cold air that's the over the States is due to move east out over the Atlantic, guess what that means? A turbo charged Jet! I'm thinking that any cold weather at this stage is not coming until after xmas, maybe not till after New Year! I think Chiono might be onto something, in that we'll have to wait till later on this winter for some decent cold.
  11. Also should mean that come next Winter, the QBO will be in full on easterly mode! Which will be a great bit of the jigsaw for colder weather
  12. This expression gets used way too much these days, it's explained here: http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/117 It's basically a belt of High pressure centred in the wrong place for us to get any meaningful cold, as a pulse of HP from the Azores to Europe and then that pulse dies and then another pulse takes it place and so on and so on and so on. I think it was Feb 88 where there is a classic example! Hope that helps
  13. Just saw some lightning to my east, probably just south of East Grinstead (ish) EDIT: SNAP!
  14. Can see lots of lightning from that line to my west.
  15. Yes the QBO is just one part, there are plenty of other parts of the jigsaw! What I'll be looking for is how much Ozone gets transported to Northern latitudes this Autumn, I believe this will indicate to how Winter starts. Loads of ozone transported north will mean a warmer Strat -> less of of a cold Strat -> less chance of a strong PV, compared to if little Ozone moved then the opposite happening. Last Autumn we missed out on a huge amount of Ozone as it went south, which left little if any heading north, this meant the Strat started off colder which in turn helped a strong PV to develop. Again only part of the jigsaw, however an important piece I think.
  16. Some hefty (and thundery) showers in the South West, not sure they'll make it here though, trajectory appears to be to the North East so over the West of our region should see something in the next couple of hours.
  17. You wouldn't even know it rained here this morning! The strong sunshine has dried everything up, even though it was pretty heavy first thing this morning
  18. Sorry Coast I was leaving work! Yes absolutely peed it down, huge puddles everywhere!
  19. is that squall line over the West due to head East or North East?
  20. First proper storm here since god knows when! First heard some rumbles around 7, then this storm started around 8.15, very dark with heavy rain. Thunder and lightning every 20 sec. Lot's of annoying low cloud unfortauntely so can't see all the lightning, but some good flashes now and again. Looks to be one more storm on the south coast that has got my name on it and then we should see some sunshine!
  21. You just know it'll end up going along the Channel even though when it leaves the French coast it was showing as heading directly North, then it'll veer NE maybe clipping the SE! I'm certainly expecting something like that to happen! I guess the years of disappointments have got to me!
  22. Can see that Tower to my South West over the Hants border, gone up very quickly, probably electrical shortly
  23. Funnily enough I got back from Orlando last Friday, been out there for 10 days and there was only 2 days when I didn't see any Lightning or hear any thunder! Surprisingly only 1 storm was directly overhead, the rest were within 5 miles of my location.Sorry to go off topic!
