  1. Not sure what the low was last night, where can you find min temp recordings. Suspect Shap easily went below freezing.
  2. Temp drop was rapid late afternoon, but the rate has stalled somewhat past 2-3 hrs... may be a bit of a breeze holding it up, it should lower more so later in the night, hoping to wake up to white frosty scenes.
  3. Err I can guarantee almost 100% if GFS verifies as shown there will be widespread frost. A large high sat atop for days on end in mid to late Nov would quickly develop its own cold pool at the surface. We have a frost for many in the north tonight under a flimsy ridge even!
  4. Still lots of late summer flowers in bloom here, geraniums and treasure flowers in my pots going strong. Also some roses about to appear, inidicative of the very mild conditions of late. Normally I woukd tidied the garden up by now, but will give it another 2 weeks and wait for the forecast colder settled conditions. Most trees though are bare and the lakeland countryside has a Nov look to it.
  5. Widespread ground frost for many north england to central scotland tonight, air frost for prone spots. Someone said nothing cold about?
  6. Many car roofs frozen. Starry night. Shap near freezing already. Fingers crossed record our first air frost.
  7. Already down to 5.2 degrees. Might we see our first air frost?
  8. Evidence its November, we are already down to 5.2 degrees. Quite probably will go below 0 degrees tonight.
  9. Chilly morning, misty. A pleasant Autumn day - bright, cool. Tonight looking frosty! More of this please!
  10. Easterlies are very uncommon in November, our cold normally comes from northerlies in November, an easterly in November won't have much bite to it, unless it is a long fetch easterly, given how warm the continent is, it will most likely deliver mild cloudy conditions, but in time could cool things down markedly. Alas interesting to see, and suggests something is stirring... what is perhaps more interesting are the developments programmed over the N Pole, PV looks very ragged, and some warm air advection through mid atlantic could easily see heights transferring west and north - classic retrogression, which would be a synoptical evolution to notable cold further down the line.
  11. Agree, sunniest to the south east and dry mostly elsewhere, suggests to me it could quite easily end up to our NW, SE parts sheltered from any light NW/N flow.
  12. Good chance we will see our first day of the new season struggles to hit double digits tomorrow, followed by a cold night.
  13. A dark wet afternoon, squall line moving through. Temp 9.4 degrees. Very Novemberish- bleak!
  14. Weren't these composites wrong forecast for second half of Oct seem to recall.
  15. As keep saying, GFS at far reaches keeps changing its tune.. a signal it is struggling with imminent pattern change projection mid Nov onwards, all quite normal service from GFS. As for nothing cold, we have a rather cold day forecast Thursday, mean of about 6 degrees, nothing exceptional, but cold all speaking, the ridge development has grown stronger as it moves closer, a sign amplification wants to kick in.
  16. 18z shows an aleutian low, NW Russia high. and what looks a split PV, dynamics conducive to arctic high. Interesting.
  17. -18 already! Most years don't see a min anywhere near that level in the UK.
  18. Yes makes sense, we were in a rain shadow effect, Pennine areas especially further east probably saw a fair amount. Dec 81 brought copious snow here, many decent single snowfall events. The snowiest month of the 80s was Jan 84, a Scotland, Cumbria event really.
  19. It's November, and time to start the coldest minima thread for the upcoming season. I don't have the list of recent coldest minimas, please someone post for reference. Feb 2021 delivered a very cold -23 degrees I think in the Highlands, but last year I think the coldest min was about -11 degrees. In some years November or March can bring the coldest minima.. Please use this thread to record your coldest minima recordings of the upcoming season, predictions of coldest minima. After the extensive warmth of 2022 so far, I'm tempering my expectations, my guess is -15 degrees in The Highlands, let's go Aboyne. -13 degrees for England either Redesdale, Topcliffe or Benson - hedging my bets! Love to say -20 degrees.
  20. Not pattern matching, but take a look at Nov 78, exceptionally mild up until last week, euro high on steriods, no sign of any chance of anything cold, then snap, ended the month with a long fetch easterly and scandi high, often things change when least expected! Can be a signal atlantic struggling, a la Nov 2009...
  21. The Jan snow event was definately one for the SW and S Wales, here snowfall amounts were negliable.
  22. Any stats first half of winter, as many forecasts suggesting a colder first half. Also I thought la nina promotes ridge ho our west Nov, but no sign of this in the models, the trough stuck limpet our west and ridge east. What is going on?
  23. November 1st marks the start of cold half of the year. However, first half of Nov is often very mild, milder than many a second half to April, largely due to mild minima.
  24. Thursday and Friday bring some polar air albeit not particularly cold, but enough to produce average temps, and possible low single digits and frost risk. thanks to a brief ridge. Indeed next few days will feel very seasonal after the anomalous warmth. First half of Nov is renowned for being generally mild and unsettled.
