  1. By the looks of the posts on here. The Oldham east area is doing poor compared to all the other areas dotted around here. Usually the other way round The snow we've had melts quick. Kind of reminds me of past winters as a child in the 80's when snow fell often but quickly melted, on /off through winter until we finally got pummelled with up to 8ft drifting later in the winter. Just to add, we only have a slight dusting of Graupel here this morning.
  2. Hi all. Previous heavy snow melted quickly. Last night gave us a bit of a covering and its not long since started with very heavy DANDRUFF We've been spoilt this winter already with the number of snowy episodes but no classic depths we are normally used to seeing up here on the edge of the pennines. I'm just one of those who likes getting snowed in with road closures. Turning to proper snow now.
  3. Heavy snow here with large flakes. It's sticking too. Very nice.
  4. Erm I did not authorise this site to sign me in with facebook and I cant delete the post >> Craig Cragz Hughes
  5. Still snow on the ground from the previous minor snow showers we've had the past week or so. It goes to show how cold it has been even on the Sunny days with clear sky's. Dandruff is dusting us over nicely
  6. Morning all, and what a nice crisp morning it is. Sun is coming up in the east and grey sky to west. Plenty of thick Snow still on the ground and it is actually getting dusted over as it is currently Snowing in Oldham. Looks like winter for a lot of people is going out on a high.
  7. There is so much snow here it will take a day or so to thaw. And looking at things, maybe precip will turn back to Snow later ?
  8. Sholver here.. roads are pretty bad around Oldham even down is Shaw pal. A mate got stuck on Bullcote lane and came home, lots didn't even bother and the as per usual gritters are stick to the main roads. Not sure about the main roads like Ripponden.
  9. It is up here towards moorside area. If not happy let me know and I will dig out the ruler for you
  10. Well people that was some change. Rain /sleet at 5.45am and then Brutal powdery snow from then onward. Already getting to 4 inches up here now. Quick video of Oldham East right now: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/113874250437993449729/albums/6258096144145145633/6258096146038203106
  11. Its still more rain with the odd dive-bombing flakes mixed in here. Quite grim but at least its turning.
  12. I know I don't post much but I just thought I would drop this in here: Highways England Severe Weather Amber Alert Please Note: This Highways England Severe Weather Alert for Snow (Amber status) is being issued in response to Highways England defined thresholds being met and denotes that there is a significant risk to vehicles using the Strategic Road Network (SRN), this is separate from the Met Office Amber alert which is triggered by different criteria and is not specific to the SRN. Regions Affected: North East, North West England Time Period: 02/03/2016 06:00 to 02/03/2016 13:00 Showers of sleet and snow are expected to affect the north of the Midlands, northwards later this evening and overnight. Confidence has grown that these snow showers are likely to merge to give a rather longer spell of snow, which could give some significant accumulations in an area from Manchester, across to Leeds and to the Humber estuary in particular. The snow is expected to start from 6 a.m. around Manchester, and 9 a.m. over the Humber, lasting around 3 hours in any one place, during which time 1-3 cm is possible around Manchester, 2-4 cm over Leeds and around the Humber, and 5-8 cm over the A628 and M62 trans-Pennine routes. (The A66 and A69 trans-Pennine routes further north are also expected to have 3-5 cm of snow). There is a possibility that the area affected could be extended either north or south slightly, so forecasts should be watched carefully. Motorists should be aware of some difficult driving conditions with some slippery roads and longer travelling times. Sounds very nice to me
  13. Really dark out there. The rain has turned to heavy sleet and is increasingly changing to huge flakes! Arh well back to drizzle it goes
  14. Yeah, Hopefully into the night when the colder uppers dig back in whilst the current band is passing through will do me nicely
  15. Well we did get snow here early this morning which layed in a few sheltered places through the day however at 297m asl we are currently getting pummelled with heavy rain. Exactly what we needed, more bloody rain!
  16. I think that may turn out to be a bit of an understatement. With the weather we've experienced so far, I'm pretty sure the upcoming cold spell is literally going to be a shock to the system. More so if those really cold -8 uppers do hit us. For me there is multiple shots a good snowfall for most of us starting Monday night into Tuesday when the low swings across the UK and starts to pull in that cold NWerly. That could pull in a few streamers off the Irish Sea. After this a shortwave swings up from the SW and as we are on the northern flank we should remain under cold enough uppers that any PPN will be snow and as others have said, blizzards due to the strength of the flow with that small dartboard low. From this point on it looks to remain pretty darn cold but dry on the whole and we would be looking at a very strong NErly to force any PPN across the pennines or more low pressure systems coming in from the SW.
  17. After a washout that has been around for what seems like an eternity, we finally seem to be on the cusp of a proper winter blast. I say on the cusp as the heavy band off ppn being fed up from the southwest may push into the north sea before it hits the block and stalls giving a good dumping over the ocean whilst we continue get a drenching. Obviously the ECM etc at 168hr would pull in some colder but at the moment it doesn't look like a pattern with longevity. Good to finally see some sort of change from the barrage of mild and sopping wet weather we have all had in recent months.
  18. That is all well and good but the OP does actually have quite some support from the other ensemble members according to that Gefs so lets write off the rest of December and start a fresh in January hey ?
  19. Wow sounds like it was bad out there while I was sleeping. On checking my station stats, you wouldn't think so with recorded wind speeds of 5-10 and top gust of 27mph. I must admit though I heard it blowing and it sounded really rough.
  20. Hi just woke up ready for my night shift and the news page on msn from the mirror has the headline: UK braces for 20 inches of snow as forecasters warn nowhere will escape! http://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/weather-uk-braced-for-20-inches-of-snow-as-forecasters-warn-nowhere-will-escape/ar-AAfLGj2?ocid=spartanntp LMAO
  21. I have to say guys, with an El Nino event underway we could be staring at far worse outlooks. I think the models are looking okay to be honest. No sign of any Euro high pressure, HP modelled to build over the artic (negative AO ?) and for our region a negatively tilted jet with troughing into Europe. Low pressure over the med is a generally a good thing at this time of year. I really don't see any mild mush, more Cold Zonal with wintry showers for the usual suspects as cold NWerlies hit.

  23. Hi guys, quick photo of the scene in Oldham East. When the cold snaps come its difficult to nail who gets what but again Mother Nature delivers the white gold. Attached
  24. It will take a major warming event to break this Polar Vortex! so it could be the end of winter when the final warming occurs when we see any meaningful cold. The stronger the vortex, the stronger the westerly winds around the pole and with that a more powerful jet. The end result is generally that the cold is locked up tight in the polar region. We are more likely going to see the jet pummelling through or to the north of the UK very often this winter.
  25. After a generally pleasant night it has changed for the worse Pressure: 998Hpa Temp: 10.3c Humidity: 98% Dewpoint: 10c Wind: 1mph SWesterly Rain in last hour 31.2mm Absolutely horrid torrential rain here.
