  1. Would appear I've just had snow in Bassaleg as the road's had a dusting. I've failed in my lamp post duties! All stopped now mind. Newport and Cardiff- home of the five minute flurries! What's for certain is whatever falls is sticking straight away- the ice pellets we had earlier are still on the out house roof, meaning the first night of 'snow' cover since Jan 2013, aha!
  2. Yup. Always seems the way in these showery set ups from the north-west around this way; the valleys just seem to suck any remaining energy out of the showers that make it past the beacons! Fingers crossed we see some showers merging, but I'm just hoping next week sees some cold embedded and then we take a chance with some fronts stalling!
  3. Ice pellets for five minutes. That was (not much) fun!
  4. Don't give up. Showers over night will most likely be snow- let's just hope they get this far inland. They look pretty intense exiting the coast of Ireland!
  5. Definite shift from wintry rain () to sleet in the last five minutes or so in Bassaleg, Newport. Gives me hope that any showers should be just about snow over night- if any actually get this far SE! Those in the valleys, west, mid and north Wales- enjoy your coverings! Think you'll be in for a good night!!
  6. Could we be any more Welsh/ British getting excited about sleety blobs in the rain?
  7. Had to sign up to the Rain Today radar... Showing sleet over my area which seems to confirm my suspicion. Much earlier than expected!?
  8. I may be losing the plot here, but as I'm too tight to pay a subscription for a PPN type radar, I'm relying on myopic eye sight! It's raining moderately here in Bassaleg atm, but from what I can see, there looks to be some very sleety clumps mixed in. Am I seeing things? Anyone getting anything slightly wintry mixed in/ anything showing on the radars?
  9. Always look forward to the forecast of snow 'north of the M4'- I live about 100 yards north of it in south Wales. I'm sure that's not what they mean, but still!
  10. Have always noticed this with his tweets. I tend to look at Ian Ferguson's as a lot more insightful!
  11. Not looking great. The front looks like it'll move through before we get anywhere near snow in south Wales. East of Oxford and SE is the best bet by the looks of things. Typical! Next week I still think could be interesting though.
  12. Happy new year all. Very suspicious of any snow chances coming straight off the back of a milder interlude. For those of us on lower land in the south it's looking like the parameters are just a little too marginal. Best we don't get our hopes up as while the global models have shown promise, the higher res models don't want to give us much to play with at all. Maybe a little back edge sleet from the front passing W to E with the colder air digging in. As @andymusic says, next week should be of more interest. Get the cold in first and see where it takes us. For us snow-starved, lets get it cold and wait it out for some fun from the NW or a battleground event! Good luck to those in search of something this week though. Get up the Beacons and Snowdonia!
  13. Given we're about to enjoy a nice easterly I thought it's probably time to log into Netweather for the first time this Autumn/ upcoming Winter. Sod's law tells us we'll get a nice, settled and cool Easterly-driven October, just for it to be blown away by some blowtorch SW'lies come November through March. Here's to hoping that's the jinx against such weather this year. Snowless since 2013 here in Newport, bar a 20 minute shower last year!
  14. Certainly don't think it's the end of the winter. El Nino has pushed our winter back six weeks or so, and all experts tend to think February will be the coldest of them all (not much competition I know.) Wouldn't call this a cold spell. We had a cold Friday and a frost. That's been it. But nevertheless it was so close to being a lot more exciting. It's always the case with us living on these islands- it takes so many factors to come together to produce snow and cold. With the lack of embedded cold, anything other than a direct northerly or easterly was going to be marginal to say the least. Anyway, there's still half the winter to go, plus March, which on average produces a hell of a lot more cold than December does for us. December 2009 and 2010 spoiled us. We'll see some continued attacks on the polar vortex, potentially with a SSW and a reduced El Nino. I'm sure there will be chances for some cold along the line. And with less residual heat in the seas around us, hopefully things will be less marginal. Chins up! Winter is only just getting started!
  15. Unfortunately the rain/ sleet/ snow over north Wales is heading into the midlands, so not much but clear spells for us down south tonight. The chilliest night for quite a few years I'm sure! Will be good to see how low it goes! Don't think people should give up on the possibility of frontal snow still on Monday, even to lower levels. The models have pushed things back west again this afternoon. Hopefully we get a sniff of something before the milder air returns (probably midweek.) I would bank this:
  16. Warm influence off the Irish Sea. You may have done better if it had hit you in the evening. Mid Wales and the valleys could do really well of the area of PPN moving down on more of a northerly wind. I'm pinning my hopes on February. Nice bit of stratospheric warming will hopefully produce a better hemespheric pattern, and give us something a bit more east of northerly!
  17. And stopped. Haha. That was a good winter anyway!
  18. I know yeah- only five minutes from me in Bassaleg. Would have thought you'd get something at least, if Heath is getting snow!
  19. Whereabouts are you in Cardiff Jay? Thought you would be getting at least sleet? Newport and Cardiff are the worst for these marginal showers. We're in need of a bit of frontal snow!
  20. Was hoping that blob of PPN would make it far enough east so I could see a bit more sleet. I fear not though. Tonight's not the night!
  21. Just driven back from Ponthir to Bassaleg (outskirts of Newport.) Was some sleety rain but not much more. Can't see lower levels getting anything more than sleet tonight. Hope I'm wrong, but a ten minute drive up the road to Crumlin should hopefully cure my snow bug for now! I wonder what the likes of us lot in SW Wales/ Bridgend/ Cardiff/ Newport would give for a couple of centimetres!
  22. Despite not thinking there would be much in this cold spell, I'm a lot more optimistic tonight. We're in for some seasonal weather, at last! It seems most in Wales with height are getting wintriness already! Maybe my eyes were deceiving me but I'm sure I detected some sleet amongst the heavier bursts of rain here. Still, I'd be surprised if lower levels get anything tonight! Tomorrow the chances seem better with showers coming off the Irish Sea in the evening. The models suggest a chance of sleet to lower levels in the south, and given the fact things seem a little chillier so far tonight, hopefully that's a good omen for something more snowy! Anyway, looks as though the heads of the valleys road is getting a good covering! Always a signal that winter is finally arriving! Good luck to everyone this week- but remember, don't be downbeat, it's only the start of this cold spell. The chances are things will get more promising as the cold air digs in. Hopefully a SSW will occur, things fall nicely, and we tap into some cold temperatures from the continent, giving us a chilly February! Been a few years since we've had a really snowy one of those!
  23. Hi all! Happy 2016! It's been a year or so since my last post in here, I think! Last bit of low level snow this way was a ten minute shower last January (I think.) Doubting that there'll be anything of note this week to either really, apart from some very cold rain! Have a feeling the valleys will get a couple of nice surprises though, and of course higher ground in north Wales! Still a long way to go though this winter though. I've been trying my best to keep track of the model thread, but it is more mood-swing inducing than my current medication... Either way, stay warm this week, and dry!
