  1. It’s always amazes me how hills of such modest height can have such a vast effect on the weather on either side of them. you’d think they were the bloody Andes at times.
  2. Neither can I but these days the media is full of “presenters” { I use that term loosely} who’s entire body language revolves around the mood they are in and if something isn’t going their was you can’t half tell. It happens with the weather and we know examples of this but aside from that subject, just look at football pundits. They say they are fair and unbiased. no chance, if their team isn’t doing well you need a wheelbarrow to carry their chin.
  3. Pretty ironic that my best chances of heavy snow are now from an easterly rather than a westerly airflow but as others have said, it didn’t seem to be like that in winters gone by. i grew up with an obsession for snow but in them days, late 1960 onwards’ information was limited to radio and tv forecasts but my memories always seemed to be of fronts coming in from the Atlantic and hitting embedded cold air over the country, often stalling and then if we were lucky, being forced back as the high to the east won the day. we seem to get at least a couple of these every winter when I was growing up and the snow seemed to last, often to the point where it went black with the smoke from what was then a multitude of factory and domestic chimneys. i’m sure that breakdowns to milder air and thaws took place more often than not but it certainly wasn’t on the scale of probability that seems to be the case now. what I also seem to remember from those days was a lack of weather warnings as well as a good honest opinion of what was likely to happen, not a emphasis on what preference of weather the presenter wanted. you got what was coming, if it was less than expected so what, if it ended up more you found a bigger shovel. enough reminiscing, it’s almost the end of 2017, all of my impressive 2 inches of snow has gone and it’s peeeeing down.
  4. No frost or signs of overnight snow here, feels quite mild really.
  5. Warmer uppers have definitely moved in now. just come back over the tops from Burnley and at 1400ft it was 2.5c and absolutely peeing it down, not even the slightest hint of sleet on the windscreen. oh and the gritters are out in force again which around here normally means that any threat of snow has gone.
  6. I can’t speak for Holcombe hill as it’s a few miles down the valley from me but although there should be a decent covering of snow, the ground isn’t frozen and the snow is the heavy wet type so it’s not going to be a classic winter walk by any means. i need to venture out myself this afternoon over to Burnley but looking at the road conditions outside my house, I think i’ll leave it until later.
  7. Yes you were slightly further south than me and when we seem to constantly find ourselves at the very northern edge of major snow events, even a few miles makes a difference to what we get. back to today and even up here the dreaded drip, drip, drip has started so anyone who wants a snow fix needs to head high and quick.
  8. Snow eased off again now but put about 50-60mm down. the main road outside my house is atrocious with two Artic’s already having to give up and reverse back down the hill. still no sign of a gritter though.s
  9. Conditions on the roads deteriorating here with cars and vans sliding up the hill, something not helped by Lancashire County Councils apparent inability to actually operate snow ploughs on roads which need them.
  10. Good to see more and more parts of the region getting in the act now. snow is turning heavier here now and we have reached the magical 5cm although temperatures are worrying and the first car bonnet avalanche has already taken place.
  11. 10 minutes ago in Bacup. now up to about 4cm but if this is the best that one of the higher parts of the highest town in Lancashire can offer then its another let down.
  12. Been snowing here since about 5am and we now have the grand total of 30mm so unless it gets its act together big time I can’t see us getting more than the minimum quoted in the Amber area. 15cm, at this rate it’ll have to snow until Wimbledon fortnight.
  13. Still snowing, maybe a couple of cm’s on the ground but looking at the speed this is pushing through the region, I suggest you get the car started now.
  14. Hope so but looking at the speed that the front is forecast to pass through, it’s gonna take some seriously heavy snow to give the totals the Met O are going for. just a thought to anyone with more knowledge than me, what’s the chance of any sort of slowing or stalling taking place or is it just going to race through into Yorkshire.
  15. Only problem is that most of it will have fallen before we get up. could be an interesting journey for anyone working in the morning though, my missus included. for me I can just go out and become a kid again.....where’s the sledge.
  16. Almost as many members in the Northwest thread as the model thread tonight. just hope that they’re not all online ordering a 100 mile southerly correction to tomorrows system although after the last couple of weeks, I can’t see there being any left in stock.
  17. Is your 0 key sticking again Moki or are you already in the Andes
  18. And south of Burnley as well looking at that. it certainly doesn’t fit with the Met amber warning area and BBC forecast which seem to give the heaviest snow across the South Pennines and Peak District. something has to give and by daylight tomorrow we should know.
  19. Came home from dry in Bury to settled snow in Bacup. only about a cm but it’s freezing nicely now so hopefully will give a nice base for the main course tomorrow morning.
  20. Nice to see myself slap back in the middle of the amber zone now not because i’m expecting a day after tomorrow scale dumping but because after the letdown earlier in the month, I can’t imagine the Met O getting is so wrong again.
  21. Good to see the cloud moving this far inland, still sunny and certainly no sign of snow but a bit of cloud is a good start.
  22. Yep got the same problem here as well. i usually don’t take much notice of the app graphics as they are all over the place but this mornings text forecast is looking good for a period of heavy snow for much of the region. lets just hope the downgrades sod off somewhere else for a change to give us a decent fall before the milder air turns everything to crap.
  23. Fully white outside, just a shame it’s only frost but maybe this time tomorrow it will be through heavy snow rather than frost.
