  1. So you arent expecting much convective snowfall off the north sea for areas further south?
  2. I think to avoid any disappointment, just expect it to rain here until thursday/friday and then hopefully as the winds swing round to E/NE we'll get the snow.
  3. If im looking at the most recent update, it seems to show the low getting up to north wales by t96, then rapidly moving south east, drawing in the colder air. Am i right? EDIT: I was looking at the 00z link thats on this website, i think that might be yesterdays 00z. Not sure if im looking at the correct charts
  4. Do you think the fact that the GFS is sticking to its guns in the short term means that it may be correct in its modelling of the low pushing further north? Shouldnt the fact that all the other models are going against the GFS mean that its being far too progressive with how far north it is projecting the low to go?
  5. Down here in the London area i'd pick out these events: Jan 2003 Thames streamer snow event. August 2003 heatwave - 38c! Can't forget that week in early August, i had to sleep with 3 fans! Jan 2004 thundersnow event - left central London on the tube, it was dry and cold, walked out of the station half an hour later near home and there was an almighty blizzard with over an inch having already fallen in just over 20mins. The snow stopped within an hour and there was mayhem on the roads. Probably around 4 inches of snow by the end. June & July 2006 heatwave - Incredible heat. Day after day of intense heat, with countless days over 30c. Feb '09 snow - The heaviest snowfall in this area since the legendary Feb '91 cold spell. 7 inches of snow fell in this area overnight, which is a rarity.
  6. Brilliantly informative post, especially for someone like me who is just learning what exactly to look out for beyond the blatantly obvious. Let's hope it all pans out in the way you are describing. We are long overdue a classic winter. Me being one month shy of 24, the only real severe cold spell i can remember is Feb '91. Feb '09 was the closest we've got since then down here in the SE, but not close enough. Thanks Steve!

  8. Looks like Manchester is getting a dumping at the moment. Check out this webcam from the city centre: Manchester City Centre
  9. chucking it down here too. at this rate there'll be nothing left in the morning. HOPEFULLY another cold and snowy outbreak next week!
  10. there's been a fairly rapid thaw today. Still a fair bit of snow around, particularly in the shade, but i'd say half of what was there last night has gone.
  11. but at least the lower temps will make the lying snow stick around longer rather than melt.
  12. that area of ppn over London seems to have appeared out of nowhere. just light rain here atm. slowly chipping away at the decent amount of lying snow we have
  13. its fizzled out into virtually nothing! hasn't actually reached here yet though...
  14. yep thats one good thing i suppose. temps have been hovering around 2/3c during the past few hours. made it very slushy, so if the temps drop then more of the lying snow will remain. theres still a lot left thankfully. only been a very slow thaw
  15. its really fizzling out as it moves east. doesnt look like we're gonna get much out of this round here.
  16. i saw that too! what a load of rubbish! they were saying any snow was going to be confined to the NW of London and that it would be light. It was much heavier, and hit a larger area. London was also hit quite badly.
  17. I agree, however she also said herself that it would fizzle out. I wasnt just going by the graphics.
  18. Just saw BBC weather. Louise Lear seems to think the snow will fizzle out as it moves SE. I'd agree from looking at the ppn currently over Cambs & Norfolk, however that blob of ppn over Hampshire seems to be pepping up as it moves NE. They didnt accurately forecast the amount of snow for today, so should we trust them for tonight?
  19. It snowed earlier with higher temps. Plus, as the front moves back eastwards we'll be getting back into slightly colder air. We are in the mild sector atm as someone else mentioned.
