Why is she weakening so rapidly? Winds this evening are already down to 145mph, that's a drop of 30mph in only 12 hours. I can see the entire storm dissipating before even reaching land.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

From what i have read this is unlikely she still has some warm water to go over and can still cause lots of damage even if she weakens

12 hours ago all the models were in agreement, usually a sign of a sure track..now they are starting to look like Ophelia...all over the place.

Bearing in mind Katrina took a very last minute turn away from NO and hit Biloxi instead, 24hrs(if that) from now could be another story

she isnt weakening still anymore is she? I thought she had weakened, but is now intensifying again, those pressure readings seem to suggest so anyway.lol

Cricky so many different things could be happening, flights are still showing Rita being in a Eyewall replacement cycles with two eyewalls, outer one is contracting, yet pressure is down to 910mbs it seems which is not consitant with a eyewall replacement cycle.

Also to have such low pressure and yet winds so low is amazing, really with pressure at 910mbs it should be at least 160mph and yet winds have dropped, obviously the inner changes occuring are stopping the winds increasing, once those changes have finally stopped expect the winds to increase back upto category-5 strength and pressure to go sub-900mbs again and upto a same sort of pwer as last night, not certain by any means but just a possiblty but a risk though certainly, esp with it aobut to travel over the warm eddy and with it still undertaking a EWR.

If this thing dies away, then I'll eat my hand!!!

Are we about to witness the mother of all hurricanes hitting the U.S.??

If it strenghtens back upto Category 5 we'll get no work done tomorrow ;)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

work, tomorrow? Thankfully i'm off :)

anyway, pressure has dropped again (910mb).. outer eyewall now contracting, therefore a drop in pressure is certain.

Someone mentioned sub 900 again..is that really possible so near to land as rita lies?

Marcus; i'm amazed that buoy is still reading.. must be on it's side by now or very near torn off its mooring ;)

I think the BBC updates on Rita on ceefax page 416 are crap. She's so volatile that these daily updates are not enough. Even this morning's is well out of date, warning of 175mph winds with gusts to 210, when she is already down to 145mph. If they're gonna bother, they ought to issue more frequent updates.
