So August now needs less than 100mm to take the May-Aug record: if the forecasts are right for the next few days it'll probably only need 75mm at most. To see 2007 in the top 20 wettest May-Augs whilst still in July is a really damning indictment of this so-called "summer".

As for the wettest summers; it seems to be within one depression of 1980 (288mm) and 1985 (293mm) and 2004 (290.4mm); and seemingly it's now beaten 1992 (262.3mm)- so it's almost certain to be the wettest of my lifetime (and of anybody else around my age's).

Mr D

Is there still several mm to be added on as Hadley is running higher?

I suspect so.

Another title 2007 could claim is the wettest January-July period on record.

Mr.Data, just out of intrest what is the wettest such Jan-July period?

It would be truely amazing to break that given we only really had 5 months of rainfall given April was very dry and added only a smal lamount to the total!

The figure I found is 675.9mm back in 1782 but I need to check for any others just in any case but it certainly in the top 5, its about 671mm or so now

As for wettest year that was 1872 with 1284.9mm, it would need another 620mm to beat that.

Interesting, one final question Mr.Data, what is the driest year ever and could we beat that with 4-5 months remaining??

Impossible

That was 1788 with 612.0mm (May-July 2007 is wetter than Jun-Dec 1788)

We already wetter than the 3 driest years on record

1788: 612.0

1921: 629.0

1887: 669.3

I take it each of these old record daily totals were in inches (or parts thereof) and then converted to metric at a later date.

Having worked in inches at infants/junior school I know how hard it was to take the measure so maybe the 18th century figures are a best guess rather than an accurate record?

That will apply to all earlier measurements in fairness.

I've noticed the Met office have pushed the rain further North again on Sunday. This shows much uncertainty even such a short time period.

Another 138.2mm to make it the wettest Summer ever. Now if Sunday drops a load in the CET area it's still going to take a lot to beat it. Now there was a very large eurption June 1912 which may have helpded it on the way. Can't see one for 1879 though.

the rain you can see, as my post on the other thread is not likely to give any concern to the flooded areas. That will happen from about 0100-1000 on Sunday.

The present rain will flirt with the south ocast counties as it moves east.

those last set of figures are even more staggering than the first two, given, as you say, August has yet to start.

Yeah they are quite amazing aren't they John. We are destroying the previous record for rainfall between May-July, by the end of the month no doub tit'll be quite a large outlier compared to the other wet months, its going to up there on its own without anything even close...and we still have another wet day to come yet which will probably take us upto 400MM+.

Even if we get above 400mm for July then to break the May-August record would still require August to have 90mm of rain to break the record set in 1879 which although not uncommon might be a stretch (hopefully) after 3 very wet months.

I think we are over 400mm now. The Met Office value was 387.6mm by the 22nd July, Philip's July rain total when added suggested 371.6mm for same time.

We may have to add as much as 16mm to the provisional total which suggest its about 410mm now.

We'll have to wait and see.

If that rainfall total fell during an actual season rather than overlapping then it would be ranked as following for the following seasons (thats the 394.3mm figure)

Winter: 5th wettest

Spring: wettest

Summer: 4th wettest

Autumn: 12th wettest
