Yup, I said that the snow warnings will be toned down but not fully removed, and lo and behold that's what happened! But you folk in the north stay safe, looks very nasty indeed. It's bad enough here!!

Well we hit 59 mph here tonight one off gust. We're fairly sheltered from SSW so some areas would have had much more so perhaps a warning should have been issued for South Yorkshire. Decisions decisions.

Oops been posting the wrong thread. What a thicko.

Been watching the advisories and warnings and I'll wait until Sunday before deciding to monitor it. Got a feeling the warnings will be downgraded again sometime later tomorrow.

I may have missed one. Certainly Tuesday night the evening forecast was going for a very wet Wednesday which didn't happen but I was going out and couldn't check.

Okay for Sheffield region they've remembered us for once.

There is a High Risk of a Severe Weather event affecting much of England, Wales and eastern Scotland during Monday and Tuesday. Periods of snow will continue to extend northwestwards through Monday, with heavy falls likely in places. Although marked variations will occur from place to place, 5-10cm is likely in many areas with as much as 20-30cm possible, especially over higher ground. Drifting will occur in fresh to strong easterly winds. This could cause disruption to travel networks, especially across higher level routes.

During Tuesday, snow may turn to rain from the east at lower levels.

This Early Warning will be updated at around 11:00 on Monday 2nd February 2009 or be superseded by Flashes.

Issued at: 1158 Sun 1 Feb

I've noticed the depths are not the extreme amounts forecast by Country file.

Lower limit 2.5cm upper 15cm.

Met office very poor depth predictions and amounts of snow so it'll be interesting too see if they get it right.

There seems to be a considerable discrepancy between the amount of snow forecast on the BBC, whose information comes from the Met' Office, and that being forecast on the flash messages on the Met' Office website.

The latest flash warnings indicate up to 10cm on high ground in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire etc whereas Thomasz Schafernaker was talking about 30-40cm for the higher ground of northern England in the forecast after the luchtime news.

Hi there TM, yes I saw that. I suspect that this was a bit of 'sexing up the news' - I would agree with 10-15 cms as a likely level depth, although the way it's blowing around here is making it very difficult to get a proper estimate of the true depth - there are already drifts of over 4 ft down our lane, and yet some patches on the fields are virtually snow free.

EDIT: posted a quick vid of the current virtual blizzard conditions on the Yorkshire watch thread for those who are interested

hiya PTFD.

not sure if you know, but that is WHY there are snow free areas, because you have big drifts.

i remember in 78 and 82 there were large snow free areas, but HUGE drifts everywhere.

I don't know how old you are, but I was speaking to a 24 year old workmate earlier, and commented about drifting snow, and he said ''what's drifting snow?''

Well the lastw arning they got right. Hip Hip Horray.

These things are like buses get none for ages and then suddenly two turn up in rapid succession.

For South Yorkshire.

There is a moderate risk of a severe event affecting parts of England and Wales. Further snow spreading from the south may give additional accumulations of 2 to 5 cm, perhaps 10 cm over higher ground.

Seen it all before left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Could be that Thomasz is using different data sets for the broadcast. Difficult to change what you're going to say at the last minute.

I think the thing that we all ultimately have to bear in mind is regardless of BBC and met office advisories this is very much going to be a nowcasting event. The BBC are slowly pushing the event further north, whilst the chart runs today and the met office have stayed pretty much as they were since yesterday

The first band, that was forecast to peter out, actually appears to be re-forming currently just south of the cotswolds so already a slight suprise in the making there is likely to be plenty more through the next 16 hours

The latest warnings from the Met' Office have upgraded Sunday evening's snow somewhat with the potential for 10cm on high ground in this area, as opposed to 5cm in the earlier warning.

Monday night into Tuesday's snow threat has been shifted about 150 miles further north to take in Leicestershire and Northants, another 60 miles further north will do nicely for me.

Edit; it even takes in Staffordshire so this really is a knife edge situation as far as my back yard is concerned.

There is a moderate risk of a severe weather event affecting parts of central and northern England, northeast Wales and parts of central and southern Scotland on Sunday. There is a potential for around 5 to 10cm of snow, particularly on hills.

Bus no.3 arrives
