You just have to laugh at that diamond shaped snowless area around where I live. The irony is it'll probably happen now, FI or not!

My current guess for Christmas is a cold dry one with a blocking anticyclone to the east bringing not especially warm southerlies. I fancy our chances of getting an easterly spell after Christmas but I think Christmas itself will be green, if possibly frosty.

Simon: The Christmas Day forecast charts are still showing high pressure becoming a major feature of the weather over the country. This looks reasonable and consectutive runs of the models are backing up this idea, but I'd still treat the forecast with caution!

Snow less likely

Forecast headline

Our nineteenth forecast update suggests a reduced chance of a White Christmas across the country. However, it's worth remembering that in weather forecasting terms it is still a very long time until Xmas. Things should become increasingly clear during the next week, and from that point on we'll be hoping for some consistency from that point inward.

The key thing at the moment is the UK has been covered by colder than average conditions for a significant length of time. The latest medium range forecasts are confident of a change to milder conditions during the week ahead. During the following week (Christmas week) there are some indications that pressure will build across the UK leading to a spell of quiet weather. It could become frosty, and a few flakes of snow in places are still a possibility.

Probabilities

Northern areas of the are considered to have a 25% chance of a white Christmas.

Southern areas of the are considered to have a 25% chance of a white Christmas

'Hopes for a white Christmas dashed with frost and fog more likely than snow'

www.telegraph.co.uk

A smattering of snow is likely to fall on high ground in the most northern parts of England and Scotland, but the majority will experience a gloomy day with temperatures between 44F (7C) and 46F (8C). However, the Met Office have predicted a touch of festive weather as gardens are likely to glitter on Christmas morning with a sprinkling of frost.

Forecasters say this weekend's wet and windy weather – which brought most of December's rain in just 48 hours to some parts – is likely to continue for a week, before the clouds depart to leave calmer weather behind. A Met Office forecaster said: "We are still very certain about exactly what will happen on Christmas Day. However, it is likely that the unsettled weather will clear and give way to frosty and foggy weather with bright spells and chances of a rain shower.

"It is very possible that there will be snow on the high ground of Northern England and Scotland, but it is unlikely to fall elsewhere."

'Hotel boss guarantees a white Christmas.. or your money back'

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news

A HOTEL boss has promised to give guests a £50 refund if they don't get any snow on their Christmas break. Andrew Cox's three-night festive deal includes bed and breakfast, Christmas lunch - and a winter wonderland on December 25.

He is offering the package for the third year - having been left nearly £3000 out of pocket due to no-snow refunds over the past two years. But Andrew and wife Jenny, who own the Loch Kinord Hotel in Dinnet, Aberdeenshire, hope their luck will change this year. Bookmakers William Hill are offering 2-1 odds of a white Christmas in Aberdeen this year.

Andrew, who has owned the hotel for 11 years, said: "We started it because we hadn't had snow for a couple of years and thought we must be due a white Christmas. "We just thought the odds were going to be in our favour. "But it hasn't worked like that, so it would be good if it comes this year. It's always quite nice to have a bit of snow for Christmas."

Next update: 2008-12-17 18:00:00

Regions Affected

The UK

Synopsis

It is becoming cleaer now for the Setup of Christmas Day. The Charts suggest a fairly cool day in the North but milder for Central and Southern areas. A weak LOW Pressure System should dominate, most likely in the far North. It seems likely for some wintry precipitation to fall over the Highest ground in the Highlands where temperatures may be near or sub zero at the peaks. Elsewhere a showery or dry situation seems likely and feeling cool. It is likely to be cool in the North with 4-9c while quite mild in the South with 8-12c. A showery theme and fairly mild for most but perhaps col enough for snow over the peaks of the mountains.

How odd?!!!

Paddy Power Pays Out On 2008 White Christmas Betting, December 15, 2008

In a move reminiscent of their advanced pay out on Barack Obama's victory, top Irish bookmaker Paddy Power have today decided to pay out over £100,000 to all players who backed a white Christmas this year. This has taken place a full ten days ahead of Christmas Day.

The unseasonably low temperatures throughout December prompted Paddy Power to slash the odds on snow to fall on Christmas Day from 6/1 to 4/1 earlier in this month and again yesterday to 2/1. Clearly, anybody who got in early is set for a hot payday.

A record 4,950 bets were placed by punters across the UK and Ireland on a white Christmas this year and all those lucky punters will be collecting their winnings today regardless of where they bet on snow to fall.

Temperatures are set to fall even further this week with meteorologists forecasting one of the coldest December's in recent times.

Closing Odds for Snow on Christmas Day

11/10 Berlin

11/10 Boston

5/4 Chicago

7/4 New York

7/4 Glasgow

2/1 Dublin

2/1 Belfast

3/1 Cork

4/1 Manchester

4/1 London

4/1 Cardiff

5/1 Paris

7/1 Madrid

10/1 Barcelona

Well the BBC monthly forecast all but rules out a White Christmas. Looks to be a westerly dominated picture with only a small reference to HP being to the south. Interesting that they equate 6-8c as being mid 50's fahrenheit though !!

The BBC monthly forecast is often tosh; albeit somewhat less mild ramping is involved now since Everton Fox left. :o

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/christmas/fea...s/origins.shtml

Where did it all start?

So where did all the fuss about 'White Christmases' start? Most of us have seen far fewer 'White Christmases' than non-white Christmases'. However, we still send Christmas cards depicting scenes like those described in Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', and children who have never seen a White Christmas draw pictures of snowy Christmas scenes.

Christmas past - the little Ice Age

Between 1550 and 1850 the UK experienced particularly severe and persistent winters. There was a greater frequency of easterly weather conditions that brought cold air from mainland Europe. It was common for rivers to freeze over, even the Thames, and was the time of Frost Fairs.

Christmas present - mild

Today, the coldest winter months tend to be January and February, so Christmas is at the beginning of the season for snow. The sun today is stronger than it was in the 17th century and when combined with the increase in greenhouse gases, winters today tend to be milder.

Christmas future - wet but not white

Current research suggests that due to climate change, future winters in the UK are going to be up to 30% wetter than today. Snowfall will decrease dramatically throughout the UK by 2080 and the annual average temperature across the UK could be up to 3.5°C higher.

Dreaming of a white Christmas?

If current research is correct, it looks like dreaming might be as close as we get to seeing snow at Christmas, if at all, unless you count "Dickens-esque" Christmas cards. So if you see snow, and it does settle, get out and make a snowman quick!

When temperatures are nearer to freezing, the snow that falls is wetter. If there is no wind the flakes can be large (up to 7cm across) as they can be made of a large number of snow crystals.
