Snow Forecast Issued: 2008-11-29 20:53:00

Next update: 2008-12-02 20:00:00

Regions Affected

The UK

Synopsis

The Christmas period is expected to be fairly mild and mainly settled. HIGH pressure is expected to dominate, bringing southeasterly winds. Therefore, mainly dry conditions are currently expected for much of the country on Christmas Day, with showers very few and far between. Fog and frost are likely. Snow is currently unlikely in most parts of the UK. Temperatures are forecast to range from 6-9C in the North, and 8-11C in the South. In general, a mild and quiet Christmas is expected, with snow unlikely at this stage.

I think the odds are better than usual, and if you can get 4:1 or 5:1 on a bet, I would take it especially for all locations except London where the odds are always worse.

My research model shows that the 24th to 27th should be below the average for December, and so if it's a cold month to start with, then this period should be close to freezing. I'm going to go out on the proverbial limb and forecast a white Christmas for "many parts" of the UK and "some parts" of Ireland. It will probably be "some parts" of the southeast as well, I suppose. Best bet for a white Christmas would be Newcastle and northeast England in general.

Although there is the trend between the last 2 forecasts of high pressure dominating, the change in wind direction between the 2 forecasts just goes too show how lightly you should take these forecasts.

Nevertheless though, they are interesting to read and i thank Stuart kindly posting them up on here, who knows the next 2 forecasts may say low pressure is set to dominate in Eastern Europe bring Northerly winds or a massive high pressure cell in Scandi bring cold Easterlies. :D

Current Bookmakers odds for a white Christmas.

3/1 Glasgow, 5/1 Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester.

I will update these odds on the run up to the big day. Certainly at the moment no value in these odds at all.

Just out of interest some odds for Scandinavian cities.

Evens Oslo, 2/1 Stockholm, 5/2 Gothenberg, 7/2 Malmo, 5/1 Copenhagen.

I think there certainly better value than the odds for the UK but nothing worth getting your teeth into just yet.

Regards,

Tom.

Getting closer ;)

Forecast headline

Our thirteenth forecast suggests an increased chance of a white Christmas. Generally we think the chance of snow this year is higher than usual, especially in the south. However, it's worth remembering that in weather forecasting terms it is still an eternity until Xmas. Things should begin to look a little clearer by mid-December and we'll be hoping for some consistency from that point inward.

At the monument our view at the moment is there is a significant chance of the UK being covered by a cold easterly airflow bringing the possibility of snow showers to southern and eastern regions in particular.

Probabilities

Northern areas of the are considered to have a 40% chance of a white Christmas.

Southern areas of the are considered to have a 45% chance of a white Christmas

Meanwhile, bookmakers have cut the odds on a white Christmas in the wake of the snow already seen and the further falls forecast. Ladbrokes has cut the odds on a white Christmas in London to 11/4 from 3/1 following another run of money. The bookmaker was originally offering 7/1 for snow on 25 December in the capital.

Glasgow is 2/1 to see snow, from an opening quote of 8/1. Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester are at 4/1.

A Ladbrokes spokesman said: "We're frozen with fear at the prospect of a white Christmas. Interest in the traditional festive wager has gone into overdrive this year."

White Christmas betting goes into 'overdrive' as temperatures plummet - forecasters predict more snow, bookmakers are slashing their odds, fearing a white Christmas could cost them up to £1m

www.guardian.co.uk/white-christmas

Paddy Power latest:

In the White Christmas odds betting market there has been moves in the last few days following the recent burst of cold weather. Bookie Paddy Power was left running for cover as snow covered the UK at the weekend in what was the coldest winter snap of the year so far. Punters ploughed in to the 5/1 on offer for a White Christmas in London as over 5 inches of snow fell in places with temperatures plummeting to freezing point. The sudden avalanche of bets will leave the bookie with a snow debt of over £100,000 if the UK wakes up to a blanket of snow on Christmas morning.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: "It is too early to tell if we'll see a white Christmas this year but it only takes one snowflake to get people excited. Betting on a white Christmas is a bitter sweet market for us. On one hand if it snows we'll be out of pocket but on the other hand we'll have a picturesque Christmas!" With Northern Europe currently experiencing unusually bad snow storms, bookmakers Paddy Power are betting on the likelihood of Britain recording one of the coldest Christmases on record! It's 40/1 that temperatures in England plummet below the record -26.1C. While it is still considered highly unlikely, that hasn't stopped people having a festive flutter.

Glasgow 3 - 1

Cork 6 - 1

Dublin 3 - 1

Cardiff 7 - 2

Manchester 4 - 1

Belfast 2 - 1

London 4 - 1

www.online-betting-guide.co.uk/news:

After snow fell all over the country at the weekend and the temperature in London dipped below the temperature in Moscow bookmakers were forced to slash the odds on there being a White Christmas.

Freak snow showers as early as October has already had punters rushing to back a White Christmas this year and the latest cold snap to hit the country has only increased confidence.

William Hill have reported that record numbers of bets have been struck this year on a White Christmas and they have responded by cutting the odds of a White Christmas in London from 8/1 to 6/1 and a White Christmas in Glasgow is now just 7/2 with William Hill. They estimate a White Christmas could cost them millions.

Many bookmakers are offering odds on whether or not there will be snow on Christmas in many of the major European cities. London is 6/1 with Totesport and William Hill to receive snow and 1/8 with Stan James not to. William Hill offer 7/1 that Liverpool has a White Christmas, the same odds apply to Birmingham and Cardiff. William Hill and Bet365 are both offering 7/2 for snow in Glasgow, Bet365 say no snow on Christmas is a 1/6 shot.

William Hill think Manchester and Leeds have the best chance of snow in England, they offer 6/1 on the cities having a White Christmas.
