The south coast are certainly getting some high winds upto storm force 55 gusting to 75mph.

http://xcweather.co.uk/

Thought the low was tracking further south, wind turned westerly here and was lighter than any of the south wind we had earlier.

Saying that the wind has picked up more now,west/NW-ly

Superb cloud formations out there at the moment and has been for the past half hour or so, made even more impressive with the sun. Pictures don't do it justice (nor my photography  ).

100mph on some of the more extreme stations is not that uncommon

especially snowdon etc ... Cairngorm etc

That reporter needs shot when she says winter has well and truely arrived in the UK, seeing as we are still in Autumn. And Severe storms hit the UK - I don't think so, most places got away with a breezy sort of day, it was just the South that got hit by the stormforce winds. The South must be classed as the "whole of the UK" then.

Snowdon is 1,085 metres just a trifle higher than cliffs at the Needles which are around 100 metres at The Old battery where the weather station is situated. Not really that extreme I wouldn't have thought, just exposed to the Channel.

The South must be classed as the "whole of the UK" then.

Did she actually say the whole of the UK? Or did she just say "The UK." I know we have some Mediterranean weather down here in the summer but we are still the UK you know.

it would be really nice if we could not descend into arguing about was it a storm, not for me, its too exposed etc etc.

The weather for MANY has been pretty bad over the past 24 hours, fairly widespread gusts of greater than 65mph for many S-SW-Wales and some central S areas, with over 70mph for quite a number, even excluding the Needles.

rainfall total over the past 48 hours, to 12z today, show that, by my reckoning, some 40+ ,places have recorded over 40mm, from the Lakes into southern England.

When I updated the Front Page this morning the Environment Agency had over 130 flood warnings out-many for flooding along the coastal belt but also for inland flooding.

So can we just TRY and stop moaning about all kinds of things unless you wish to do it in the moaning thread.

there you are Paul-you could save all that money going to the US of A and simply drive around the UK when Nick predicts such happenings.

great piccs by the way-but hope there is not too much in the way of damage when you go to take photos tomorrow.

Paul, thanks for the update, I was able to send a link to my sister in Spain who is as interested in our weather as I am.

I am beginning to wonder how much longer this wind will continue, we have had these gales and strong gusts ever since it got light and it is now getting dark.

Longest storm I ever remember. '87 was much more severe but didn't last anywhere near this long.

For those who seem to think that the storm was meant to hit all of the UK - that the SOUTH = the whole UK - see this:
