Interesting to note that the heaviest and also the driest looking snowfall on all the traffic cams appears to be at Helmsdale (furthert north cam) this must be the extra cold air digging in behind the cold front.

Loch Morlich has frozen over however and has a deep covering. Nagar, Loch Na Eilean etc must have frozen over too?

I'm a bit worried that the split in the precipitation bands may end up over me!

We could all get our hairdryers out and point them north to help generate more ppn LS?!

It's taken forever to push south.

I'm not excited anyway, because I know it's going to fall as rain in Aberdeen.

I was out in Westhill this afternoon and there's is loads of snow, particularly up near the golf course.

You and me both, think we need to move inland.

Local radio (Moray Firth) saying lots of roads in the area are affected by Snow.

All we have had here in the far north is rain rain rain all day. However our only road south is now badly affected. No papers tomorrow.

Guaranteed LS, guaranteed! This is what I thought would happen.

God no! We'd have to be in an ice age for Loch Ness to freeze over, it's absolutely gigantic. Almost all ponds, burns etc have frozen over or have ice in them though. Ness, Lomond, Courisk, Linnhe and Nevis are very unlikely to freeze over I think.

You learn something new every day! :wallbash:

Did they freeze over in the really cold winters like 63?

Tonight, precipitation will affect the central belt of Scotland between 6pm and midnight according to the GFS:

http://212.100.247.1...236a3dd536dcf8

Max temperatures will be close to freezing around this period according to the charts in Extra, and dewpoints around -1 or -2C.

I imagine that much of the central belt will see snow from this, albeit not in large amounts.

Not certain, but there were a few winters in Inverness where the canal and the river, both of which flow directly from Loch Ness, froze over (the latter only partly), so this suggests some freeze on the loch. However, Loch Ness alone has more fresh water than England and Wales combined, so it gives you an idea of just how cold it would need to be for it to completely, let alone partly, freeze over. Lomond, Morar, Linnhe, Nevis etc are also very big, so I doubt they would freeze over. Small lochan freeze over all the time, especially in the mountains, but it's rare for them to be as frozen solid as they are now with such deep coverings of snow

The 5.30pm radar is even better. Places like Huntly and Alford should get a pasting in the next few hours.

Foudland traffic cam is the one to watch now

Thats Scotlands most famous Snow road shut.

A939 Cock Bridge to Tomintoul.

Surely not more famous than the Slochd and Dromochter?

Nothing but slizzle!! :D

Pete, calm down mate, you make me panic sometimes! :D The colder upper air temperatures are only just coming in and there will be some heavy showers tonight which will allow the temperature to drop in time for that perfect strong NE wind coming down the firth!
