Finnish lapland and NE Norway should see some tomorrow and maybe Tuesday, another northerly flow appears on Thursday/Friday, expect slight dustings.

Cannot link as on phone, but here is Alta in northern Norway.

Well it's a start after a poor autumn for snow in that part of the world!

http://62.63.51.10/v...x.shtml?id=4094 Hammerfest, brilliant live video cam that you NEED to view!

post-12276-0-49927200-1321255514_thumb.j Alta, which has awoke to a wonderland after a mild autumn.

post-12276-0-00751000-1321255848_thumb.j Alta's ski resort, looking snowy.

post-12276-0-03143500-1321255665_thumb.j Vadso again, this time, a place nearer the town centre.

post-12276-0-56236600-1321256016_thumb.j First of a collection of traffic cams in NE Finland.

post-12276-0-83371300-1321256050_thumb.j A rather eerily unique and tranquil scene just NW of Ivalo.

post-12276-0-89893200-1321256100_thumb.j Quite the snowfall here near Ivalo.

post-12276-0-40467500-1321256160_thumb.j A snowy scene quite far south in lapland- just SE of Sodankyla.

Snowfix for the day- and tonight and tomorrow could see the kola peninsula, far east finnmark and east lapland have a fair amount of snowfall.

I'll leave you on the frosty (not snowy) scene in swedish lapland, near Kiruna, where the building of the Icehotel began a couple of weeks back;

Morning all!

Well there are still plenty of positive anomolies in Europe, but not Scadinavia :(

The snow is still well up though, which is always good news.

(I've put this year and last year for comparison).

Some serious snowcover in Russia generally.Every where else in Europe apart from the extreme edges to the east are snowfree pretty much.

For sure, now they need to start spreading the love! :good:

It's unusual that the snow in Russia has reached the Caspian Sea, they have winters milder then we do!

I know pretty much sod all about the weather and terminology etc but have seen people talking about a Euro High? Is that what has caused the snow to just pretty much stop where it has done? Scandi and Western Europe etc?

Yes basically trisnow, it's limited any potent arctic outbreaks to W Russia (apart from this w-end/monday of course) and has gave dry anticyclonic weather to C Europe and mild southerlies for W Europe.

Sorry, but It's not true. Astrakhan's daily mean in January is -4.8ºC

Very impressive snow cover for Russia. All we need is a Big Freeze for Eastern Europe and Scandi and our set up is perfect (then we can wait and watch for those beaterlies to develop!!"!).

Parts of the Caspian Sea have a subtropical climate. Astarkhan is not on the Caspian Sea.

Aaron is correct - parts of the Caspian Sea area have milder winters on average than parts of the UK, the Baku region (capital of Azerbaijan) for example being milder than many parts of the UK.

You're not being greedy enough AWT - as Scottish people what we really want are Northerlies and North Easterlies :p

Ok, Baku (Azerbaijan) is mild in winter. Daily mean in Baku is 4ºC in January, as Glasgow, but russian caspian sea area is by far colder than UK in winter months.

Astrakhan lies on the left bank of the Volga river, close to where it discharges into the Caspian sea at an altitude of 28 meters (92 ft) below the sea level.

Greetings!

Ah right thanks, it does look pretty evident there looking at the pic where the snow just stops.

So if that Euro High hadn't been there for so long then all that lovely snow may have just carried further and further eastwards to our shores?? I'd like to think so!

Afternoon all!

Well still looking good for everywhere else on Earth, except this side of Europe, but it's very, very early days.
