Certainly much colder in Canada this year, Hudson Bay sea ice coming along well, and the two large lakes in Canada (Bear Lake and Slave Lake) are completely frozen over when this time last year they weren't even freezing over at all

Sorry, northern Canada then, especially northwest Canada where there is record cold currently along with Alaska

Great to see the first snow cover of the winter in the UK. Haha we've already done a better job than Europe and Scandinavia for mountain snowcover!

Fantastic to see a small white blob on the map over Scotland(Highlands). It is great to see the progress through this thread, keep up the good work guys!

The caspian sea early freeze (I'd think it is was early) is a good composite for scandinavian warmth. The mean trough position has been rather far north and east of scandi and therefore all the cold has been diverted, any cold has generally been 'transient toppler-events' in scandi before the high pressure in europe collapses it and the jet as per rides on top. This has been exceptional in the strength of the block against the jet, and now we see signs of the block subsiding and diminishing towards Russia to continue the subtropical ridge, I can see lows crossing scandi giving cold n/e winds for much of northern scandi (this gives most places east of the scandi mtns. Kiruna, Rovaniemi etc the best chance of snow), or of course the more typical 'Svalbard low' moving into lapland and the kola peninsula, giving cold n winds, especially the longer the trough sticks. I am more optimistic for scandi snow in December.

Good morning all!

Well here are today's images.

Not an awful lot of change, maybe a bit of an increase in red anomolies, but nothing too significant.

I still think we shan't see any decent cold until Scandi' freezes over ,so, hopefully!

Think of how cold it will get if we get an easterly blast though :p

Problem is that even an easterly would be much modified by all that mild snow free land over Europe!

I bet it would be drizzly and hardly even a frost.

Interesting that north America now has a big anomoly and that Scandi's is a bit bigger?

Oh! and the top picture is the same time last year for comparison.

With the pattern shifting away from a Euro High Scandinavia very likely will see more snow in the coming week and at least the northerly anomalies will be more or less wiped out.

UhHuh.

I'm also interested in that fact that the ice above iceland is larger .. This to me looks like theres a lot colder pool of air at ground level than normal and that the sea is also cooler than normal.

I would expect that as soon as the blocking to the east drops off and allows the cooler air to finally work its way west, we will see alot of snow quickly.

I personally think that this winter will be another corker with a fair amount of snow and surprises..

All I can say now is.. Don't let this warm mild weather fool you.

I have been saying this to friends and family and people are now stuck in the mindset that its just gonna be mild and wet all winter.

I don't think this will be the case. As soon as the colder air gets its chance it will push in colder than normal. Its just banging on the door currently and as soon as that opens it will be something to behold I think.

Also, Considering cooler air is harder to push away with the warmer air rising above it, I think that we would end up with a fair amount of "wet snow" events.

Just my 2c.. mark my words :)

Edit:

Lovely snow in iceland at the moment.

It appears that an ice bridge across the Bering Strait, between Alaska and Russia, was complete by 26th November. Has this happened particularly early this season? It also looks as if there will be complete ice coverage in this area very soon.

Ice in the Chukchi sea (N. of Bering Strait) is a little below average but ice in the Bering sea is a little above, so a roughly average amount of ice there for the time of year, but well ahead of last year!

Nice to see a bit more snow in Scandi. Only parts of North America, Eastern Europe, the Baltics, the Alps and parts of Scandi to go now.

Major cold surge is forecast for the western/central USA soon, so a lot of those anomalies should go. As should the Scandinavian and Alps anomalies.

All in all, good snowcover!

Good too see Hudson Bay is getting a constant cold blast for the foreseeable future starting from today as the ice is quite a bit below average although it is an improvment on last year however. Be interesting how much ice will have formed over Hudson by the end of this week.
