Very green United States bar Montana, Utah, Colorado etc, - Eastern seaboard experiencing very mild conditions at present, (forecast was to be for a severe winter) - time for things to change though.

actually the eastern seaboard was forecast to have a mild winter the real cold was forecast for the west and mid west of the America and Canada...however it has been very mild across the whole of North America the last 2 months or so.

Really? I read somewhere that the East/North Eastern States were forecast to have a severe winter - probably one of numerous forecasts.

What a stupid thing to say with all due respect, Germany has contributed and is a net contributer to the EU unlike the UK. if one nation has secured itself financially and doesnt go into debt and spend money that they don't have, it's Germany.

What a silly, ignorant and uneducated thing to say! Christmas spirit or not!

Not surprised by Moscow or Minsk, but I cannot believe Sofia has a white Christmas but Stockholm and Helsinki do not! Totally messed up..

But Sofia is much warmer in winter then Stockholm or Helsinki, a December in Sofia is like a December in Braemar.

You are partially wrong. Sofia is warmer than Stockholm but is colder than Braemar.

JANUARY AVERAGES 1961-1990

Braemar 0.7ºC (from Metoffice)

Sofia -1.3ºC (from WMO)

Stockholm -3ºC (from WMO)

December and February is the same.

Second try. December Averages

Braemar (Metoffice) 1.75ºC

Sofia (WMO) 0.7ºC

.

A difference of 1ºC on average is enough.

This happens often in situations like this. Mild Tm airmasses over southern scandi due to lows crashing northwards, and that persistent euro high... this also gives cold ne/e winds to much of se europe, delivering sea-effect snow for most.

A very typical pattern of the early 2000's and late 1990's, but it is indeed rather unlikely for Stockholm and Helsinki to not have a white xmas as such a pattern usually delivers the odd toppler or Pm blast.

They are very similar, never said identical.

In fact the minimum temperature in december 2011 (so far) has been -3.5ºC in Stockholm (Bromma airport) versus -10.8ºC in Sofia.

The last 30 days in Stockholm (Bromma airport), Min. temperature so far -3.5ºC

http://www.ogimet.co...&min=0&ndays=30

and the last 30 days in Sofia (Bulgaria), Min. temperature so far -10.8ºC

http://www.ogimet.co...&min=0&ndays=30

Personally I am not surprised, because many years Sofia records temperature lower than Stockholm.

The lowest temperature ever in Sofia was -31ºC versus - 32ºC in Stockholm. Almost the same.

There are people in this forum that ignores what the climate of Eastern Europe is.

Yes, the Korean Peninsula is very cold in winter. Pyongyang in January is as Helsinki, and Seoul as Stockholm. Seoul has latitude corresponding to 37ºN, as Seville (Spain)!!!

Right now Seoul -14ºC
