Wasn't Minsk, Moscow the other day (for Xmas day) showing the barest of lying snow? looking at the above chart shouldn't that be green around those areas as well? - looking pretty poor at the moment.

MInsk is green...MInsk is the capital of Belorussia

The northern hemisphere really is doing very poorly for snow for the time of year - reminds me of this time in 2006 when only the northern half of sandi had any decent snow amounts. I visited Moscow new year 2007 and there was no snow and the rivers were free of ice- unbelievable.

The lack of snow in china, korea and mongolia and US and Canada is also very notable, blame the polar vortex. Things should change markedly as we through January but there is no getting away from the fact it has been an exceptionally slow start and poor start to the winter snow wise in so many parts of the northern hemisphere.

New Year's Eve celebrations with snow in Reykjavik (Iceland), Sofia (Bulgaria), Pristina (Kosovo), Sarajevo (Bosnia), Tallinn (Estonia), Vilnius (Lithuania), Minsk (Belarus) and Moscow (Russia). The only ones European capitals where today there is snow.

But only in Reykjavik, sofia and Sarajevo (no webcam sorry) there is enough quantity.

I hope no one minds me posting the NYE map of Europe's snowfall cover? There have been some nice additions across eastern Europe with south and east Poland getting a fair amount of snow along with parts of Lithuania and Belarus:

Looks like Southern Scandi will be snow free for a while.. last time that occurred in January was the winter of 2008 which was the mildest on record for Scandi I think

A lot of snow in the Balkans

Rarely a greek city is the coldest of Europe. Today has been the case, Florina in Northern Greece, with snow, -17.8ºC.

There is still enough snow in South-East Europe. Sofia and Sarajevo are among the few European capitals that continue with snow.

I think central asia and east turkey and iran have seen a notably snowy winter so far compared to much of Europe and N America and even China and Korea.

Well here's today's update.

Strange seeing such a stalemate with the negative anomolies, let's hope it changes and soon!

Very little snow in Europe this winter. The unique european capitals with a lot of days with snow on the ground are Reykjavik, Moscow, sofia and Sarajevo.

Sofia today,

Yes I've noticed how consistently cold Sofia has been in recent weeks compared to the likes of Stockholm, Oslo, Warsaw and even Moscow. SE Europe tends to fair much better than northern europe when we have a raging atlantic as heights tend to be higher to the west and thus surface cold or light NE airflow envelops the region.

The likes of Oslo and Stockholm must be experiencing one of their mildest starts to winter ever I imagine.

On some occasions nightime minima in Madrid and even Athens have been colder than those experienced in the northern european capitals. Suspect we will see thing revert back to normal in the next week or two. NE Europe is about to see a significant cold plunge at the end of week.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of the huge snow falls on the alps, with slopes in Austria reporting 5m of snow!

Fascinating picture, illustrates perfectly the effects of the Gulf stream on NW Europe...just look what everyone else has at the same latitude!

Has Stockholm in Sweden had any snow this winter? I'm shocked to see it still snow-free in late January, surely a record.. anyway the forecast for Stockholm is cold with sub-zero temperatures day and night so just need the snow to fall.
