I actually think as we go through December the prospects for hill snow further snow will increase. I'm also still going for a severe cold spell around Christmas so I'm sticking with my guns!

Red - Below Average

Russia is insane at the moment.. I like how the snow follows the border of Russia and neighbouring European countries.

^^ It seems to be well up on last year also, the only places really lacking are the Alps and Scandinavia but that picture is improving at least in Scandinavia's case.

Most of Scandinavia and eastern Europe should get covered next week as well.

Scandanavia will be mostly white by this time next week I imagine - only southern coastal parts will remain snowfree. Fully expect a fair bit of highland scotland to be white this time next week - sub 528 dam air and powerful evaporative cooling will ensure snow should get down to preety low levels. The Alps should benefit next week thanks to sinking of the trough SE in time.

Current snow cover over russia is notable - all good in the long term of keeping temps well down and meaning any easterly would be preety cold.

I hope we can see some white dots in England soon.. the Pennines have not had any snow so far have they? Or the Lakeland fells.

The Pennines and Lakeland Fells have seen no snow so far this autumn - very late indeed. However, tomorrow should bring the first snows of the season for ground say above 700m especially on the lakeland fells. Next week should see the snow level lower significantly, probably down to 400m by middle of the week as we see colder uppers. I am looking forward to seeing some white stuff again.

Morning all!

Well here's today's.

Interesting to note the lack of snow on both The Alps and The Himalayas?

Also the way the snow stops exactly at the gates of western Europe, must be a NATO snowsheild against Russia? :D

I did think the same thing....

Is the boundary marked by anything? Like a large river? ( Im pretty sure it isnt.. )

Otherwise, your comment is the only explanation.!!

Ironically, there appears to be more Arctic ice this year than last! Come on snow!

It's a mountain range called the Urals!

Loads of negative anomalies are now appearing in the US which is a side effect of the zonal pattern.

Pretty sure the Urals are a good few hundred miles East of that snowline.

Yes the Urals are quite far inland. The snowshield line follows the eastern line of the blocking high that sat over europe up until early this week preventing any fronts from moving in from the north.

As I said yesterday much of northern and central scandi should be white by the the middle of next week and also baltic states - so most of russia should then be white completely.
