warning for the south east at last..Bit late?

To be honest it's not really SE but more NW of London, - a continuation of what we have been looking at (and for some, experiencing) for hours now! I would have thought that if you just stepped out of your office or read this thread, you could have predicted this 8 hours ago:

Issued at - 18 Aug 2011, 15:18

Valid from - 18 Aug 2011, 15:00

Valid to - 18 Aug 2011, 20:00

Further heavy rain is likely to continue into this evening. The public should be aware that this may lead to localised flooding, particularly now that the ground has become saturated.

I have to chuckle a little bit, the use of the phrase 'further heavy rain is likely to continue into this evening' makes it sound like " yeah, we've been on the case all day and now we are giving you an update to what we told you earlier" !!!! doh.gif

OK, as this photo seems to have captured people's imagination, I've resurrected the NW caption contest for a while for you all to have a go:

Dear oh dear environment agency. As of 3pm, 0 flood watches, warnings, ANYWHERE. We must all be imagining those homes being flooded, and cars up to their bonnets in floodwater right across the home counties.

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31618.aspx

Unfortunately the Environment Agency deal with fluvial and coastal flooding and a lot of the flooding so far has been surface water, which Local Authorities have responsibility for, or overwhelmed sewers systems. I think a warning for this should have come from the Met Office (Heavy rain...could lead to localised flooding..)

There is a lag time between rain falling and the rain reaching the rivers (how much depends on the catchment). Levels are starting to increase now and triggering the alarms so EA flood warnings for the affected areas are starting to come through now.

Phew, home again! Driving to / in the New Forest was apalling, worst weather I've driven through in ages. Motorway was very slow (apart from the usual death-proof speed idiots) and driving to my friend's house was interesting as I don't have a 4x4 and nearly floated my car across the "puddles" to her house! It has stopped raining here now, rain gauge now showing 9.8mm (was 6.4mm before I left), sky seems brighter too. Oh, and I agree about the disgusting lack of warnings issued by the M.O. I've fired an email to them and if I get a reply I'll post it. I was as nice as I could be lol! P.S. The Veggie "Larder Board" was very yummy Coast blum.gif

Hi,

Hopefully I won't get in too much trouble for this from Paul et al.

As mentioned by others, further interest could come from the second batch moving NE'wards slowly towards the central M4 corridor. No sferics reported from this yet but I imagine some potential may well ensue.

19.2mm from the last batch here in Newbury, possibly more to come.

A thoroughly wet day for parts of the south and a cold one too.

Cheers

Not enough 'flesh' in it for me I'm afraid!

I'm more concerned about that picture on your desktop wallpaper! ohmy.png

This doesn't look like its over yet and the areas that have been affected could do without any more rain.

That looks like the Kent clipper then, although at that angle it might graze East Essex if it ever crosses the Channel. Still, all bodes well for something more at the weekend *fingers desperately crossed smiley* gif

Mariah Carey. wub.png fully clothed. I don't think I'll be asking what's on your desktop blum.giftease.gif

On topic, some naughty weather out there today and as I type I'm at 20mm for the day and am in the firing line for much more.

My location puts me out of the wettest areas but I suspect it's fare to say some places may well end up in excess of 70mm. whistling.gif

Cheers

Good luck for the weekend Coast .smile.png Sadly the MO now sees no thunderstorm potential for me for the weekend rolleyes.gif .It's a shame really as earlier it all seemed so hopeful. Oh well, sad.png

Is it going to rain here or not? That's not actually a question, more of a rhetorical one.

Yes, not clever in parts of our region if you're on the road.

I'm looking likely to exceed 25mm sometime soon. 31.8mm in Thatcham and much more to come and as such the heaviest batches have missed this general area.

Soggy Regards

Showers are starting to pep up over the Pennines now, is this what the yellow warning was for from the MetO I wonder as up to now it's OK here! Something developed earlier then fizzled to nothing.
