Parts of southern England have been hit by flash flooding after torrential rain hit the south coast. Police in Dorset said the main area affected is Bournemouth. Vehicles, including buses, have broken down and roads have been closed due to the sudden downpour.

Residents have also reported drains lifting and water almost rising up to the bonnets of cars. In Bournemouth town centre, Wessex Way was closed for a time because of flooding and traffic was diverted via The Triangle.

"Surface water does remain in areas and motorists are advised to proceed with caution and avoid making journeys if at all possible," a Dorset Police spokesman said. "A number of roads are closed and a good deal of vehicles have broken down."

The force said parts of Wimborne Road, Wellington Road and Magna Road are blocked because of the rain and broken-down vehicles. Exeter Road is closed after a wall collapsed - because of the floods - and ruptured a gas main, causing homes and businesses to be evacuated. "It is Bournemouth town centre where the heaviest floods are being felt," the spokesman said. "The latest information I have is that the rain is calming down and a lot of the surface water is starting to subside."

Stephen Davenport, a senior meteorologist with MeteoGroup, said: "There was flooding in parts of Dorset caused by torrential thundery rain, especially in the south where nearly 20mm of rain fell in just one hour between 10am and 11am on Thursday. Over 50mm accumulated in places in six hours between 6am and midday."

Given the amount of spray and danger to traffic on roads such as the M4, the lack of a warning is a massive c*** up by the met office. This is one of the worst from them that I have seen!

Just incase nobody seen it this is the response from the MetO when I asked about why no warnings etc where placed:

Thank you for your email.

The Met Office has been forecasting heavy rain for a few days. Met Office weather warnings are only issued for widespread disruption and the heavy rain in Southern England has been localised, therefore warnings have not been issued.

Thank you for the picture you kindly provided.

I hope this helps to clarify matters for you. Thank you for taking the time to contact the met office.

Kind Regards

Sarah

Nice one coast air_kiss.gifblum.gif

I'm going to stop doing this really as everyone should get NW extra as it's such a brilliant set of tools!!! (plug over) But actually, the one place on the net where you can find out the rainfall for today in Dorset is only two clicks away!!!

Now I would call this 'substantial'

And how much do we pay to keep the Met Office going??

Chocolate teapots come to mind ......just about as useful as...

Still yakking down here .....I've even got a small amount of water coming in around my wood burner flue, and that has never happened before! (Best I sort out my flashing before the winter)

Even with a major public event attracting thousands of visitors to the area? Methinks some I have a problem-covering is going on.

Welcome to the 2011 Bournemouth Air Festival. **Unfortunately all day time flying displays have been cancelled today due to severe flooding and in order to maintain public safety. The dusk displays are currently under review and we will provide an update at 4.30pm. All evening ground entertainment has been cancelled. The display programme for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is currently not affected.**

I hope they have as much luck as we did last Sunday at Eastbourne Airshow! good.gif

Thanks John, The nearest one backs up the NW radar pretty much with Rodwell showing:

Rain today - 41.4 mm

and Wareham showing 54.8mm

not my video i'm glad to say. I hope whoever took it takes themselves to the doctors checking themselves out for waterbourne diseases as one of the reasons the air-display is now cancelled was due to storm/sewer drains being blown from the pressure of the surging water. All of that is still pouring into the sea and will likely deem it unsuitable for swimming in for some weeks to come. It wouldn't surprise me if drinking water is also effected from this aswell for some days/weeks to come.

Heres a question to put out there..

Why..Is the wind blowing from the North? The lower cloud is moving North to west ?

Not Sure why...but I know that its going across the sky at a fair rate of knots as well.....getting very dark now, but looking at the radar we could miss out the rain?

But 99% of the time any rain that arrives at the Oval..we get about an hour or so later....so looks like my cricket could be off tonight???

Thanks for this.

Whitchuch and Overton, both in N Hampshire are showing 62mm and 50mm respectively for today.

No need for a weather warning then!help.gif
