GFS Isotach 10m mean wind plot km/h

Also showing 70km/h up through the English Channel. While the main event will be further North, there could still be a sizeable effect further South as well.

Gales will be blowing up the channel, likely gusting 50-60mph.

Still says updated @ 16.45 6th December?

I thought you meant the actual weather warning, now I realised it was the cold weather planning, my bad :)

Look at the Meto site, 75mph gusts in Carlisle progged I imagine that will cause big problems in a built up city. 75mph in Keswick and 85mph here on the coast, these from the usually conservative Meto!

GFS 6z progging mean speeds of 66mph through the Irish Sea, I reckon gusts up to 90mph on the extreme coastal areas are likely.

Am I correct in thinking the worst will be on the coasts? Just wondering how bad things look inland in areas like Leeds for example.

from www.metoffice.com

Issued at - 07 Dec 2011, 11:41

Valid from - 08 Dec 2011, 10:00

Valid to - 09 Dec 2011, 06:00

Winds will increase during Thursday morning with severe gales developing across many northern and central parts of the UK, and some particularly damaging storm force winds likely to affect parts of the north, including some major population centres in Scotland.

The risk of disruption is considered highest across central and southern Scotland where the police are advising that conditions for travel will be extremely poor and that travellers are likely to experience significant delays.

Winds should tend to ease from the west on Thursday night with the severe gales becoming confined to NE Scotland by the early hours of Friday.

Heavy rain and hill snow are additional hazards that will accompany the gales (see our snow warnings for details).

The public are advised to take extra care, further information and advice can be found here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/links.html

Amber warning shows the area of impact from the severe gales/storm force winds, quite a wide area.

Red Warning signifies where the highest impact will likely be - Highly populated cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh through the central belt.

Snow warnings now appear to have been removed, are we looking at these being updated too? What are the chances for us seeing anything in the way of snow for the northeast?

Also to add to what I said before the Met Office are experiencing some technical difficulties at the moment. I would expect the snow warnings to return shortly.

They had issues with the wind warnings before.
