Hail grauple and the occasional burst of wet snow is what we're getting. Fortunately for me, hail and grauple is my favourite weather. More so than snow. :D

I'm keeping half an eye on it, but by the time it reaches here it will be just a few flakes. Oh, and if it falls as hail I don't want it :p

Why are we getting hail and not snow. It must be easier to snow.

Its not cold enough for snow unfortunately; hail falls faster, and doesn't have time to melt. Most of the decent stuff is reserved for Eastern Cumbria and Scotland this time I think.

Simply because we have the instability to produce it. Cold 850's and warm SSTs is a recipe for coastal hail, gradually turning to snow inland as the atmosphere loses its instability. The 500HpA temperatures are very supportive of consistent hail too. Can't complain, if the instability wasn't there, it would be plain old rain, as the dewpoints are the wrong side of marginal.

No thanks, I can't think of anything more depressing than hail when you expect snow. It nearly happened on the 18th December 2009, luckily it turned to powder snow after dark when the temperature fell a few degrees below freezing.

Yup i agree, all i hope for is too see falling snow, then my snow deprived state will be cured until we at least get a decent easterly later in the month (hopeful?) or January :)

The convection is firing up the cells over the Irish Sea, and with a brisk NWly wind being carried inland still developing as they do so. Only a lowering of CAPE such as yesterday evening before midnight will have the precip falling as snow again.

Quite a thing to witness however being under this streamer all day, watching one cell after the other come over.

Damn, that's a lot of showers forming in SW Scotland/NW England just to be fed into the greedy pennines!

Happy days for the guys up at Yad Moss...another good start to the season in the offing for them!

Yes! Weardale ski club, Allenheads etc, a great start for them... this shower should add another centimetre for them, mebbes not for the NE38 contingent over here.

Yep - think it's a case of a weekend trip with the kids up into Teesdae/Weardale for some proper snow. At least we live within an easy drive of such an area - even if we don't get anything down here, it's not far away. :good:

Has anyone else noticed how intense that precipitation has been all day in the North Sea? If only this had be a NE'ly...
