A few bigger flakes now and slowly getting heavier but still seems sleety to me.

Andy

It's quite a weird type of snow - the flakes are actually quite dry, but there is what looks like tiny hailstones mixed in. Definitely not the wet mush that you think of as sleety, but not 100% snow either.

looks like rain hitting the window here

Same the window is rather wet as if it is raining but it is most certainly snowing like mad!

Snow getting very close to Cleadon now- the horizon to the west/north is disappearing.

Just had some fish+chips on the dining table- we could see through the conservatory initially very light flakes in the wind, now it's moderate snow with a good breeze, beginning to lie, especially on pavements and the street.

What most surprises me is that i was expecting anything for another hour or two, we could still have falling snow until after 9 o clock tonight at this rate!

A bizarre mix of powdery snow and freezing rain at Cleadon, with the temp falling to 0.9C- if this stuff gets heavier it should settle.

I'm sure the first band has cold enough temperatures for snow throughout (e.g. still down at 0.8C at Lancaster near Morecambe Bay according to Wunderground) but will it stay cold enough when the second band comes over? I have a nasty feeling that the second band might lift the temperatures a bit with sleet/rain.

Nah me neither there is a big hint of marginality with this snow, could still go either way! The precipitation is fairly heavy that i don't think it'll be a problem at the minute though

Still having ice pellets mixed with some larger flakes falling.I think this might struggle to settle unless it gets heavier soon as surfaces are now wet rather than white.I hope i am wrong!

Now 100% snow at Cleadon, though still very light- the ground is still bone dry. The radar suggests patches of precipitation will be on and off for a while, it's all about how much intensity they maintain as they approach the east coast.

I'll be keeping an eye on the temperatures in NW England as the second band approaches- if they don't rise much above 1C we could be in for a fair amount of snow, but if we see the likes of Lancaster shoot up to 2 or 3C then the implication will be a distinctly marginal event.

Ice pellets here - not good...

Edit: and snow is mixing back in. Good. Surfaces aren't wet, the ice pellets are just blowing across them.

Right I'm off to town for a couple of hours - hopefully the ground will be white when I get back. In fact I hope I can't see the ground at all :)
