I think as it goes METAR/TAFs are based on observational values rather than forecasts so although useful to pilots to gauge a rough idea of what an airfield conditions are likely to be they aren't solely based on accuracy as this is still down to the pilot's assesment of the situation aswell as airfield landing capabilities (ie CAT III instrument approaches which Manchester is designed to deal with on the VOR/DME/ILS approach.)

Icicles are starting to form on our shed and fence! Haven't seen that from just rain before! Fingers crossed for 3 pm then...

you have freezing rain. one the precip hits a cold object it freezes instantly. Ground temperatures are still below freezing

A quick sortie outside, and I can confirm we have freezing rain. Rain that's colder than normal. :D

its the ground thats frozen, hence water hitting it, and instantly freezing. If rain was colder than normal it would be snow or even hail lol

1/2 an hour of snow , then ice and freezing rain...yet another crap call by the METO :sorry:

Freezing rain is rain that has a temperature below 0C, as this hits the frozen ground, it turns to ice instantly.
