Pffttt ... nothing more than some bursts of light to moderate rain and gusty winds as the cold front went through London.

An impressive thundery squall line stretching from the SE Midlands up to Nern Ireland though! Given the linear forcing nature of the cold front and cloudiness before the fronts arrival, not really been chance for discrete storms to develop severe weather, though quite squally winds along the squall line.

Pinning hopes that Sunday may bring a chance of one or two isolated strong storms across the SE before cold front moves through, hot and humid air in place (30-32C possible) - with high CAPE values suggested by GFS (maybe OTT), though only thing that will stop storms triggering will be lack of upper support.

Could be more developments to come from the theta-plume as the humid air transfers westwards forcing yet more instability behind the front.

i know people will disagree but west cumbria and the area around crewe is the worst place for storms in the uk.

wow OMG! I just had the most amazing squall ever About 10 minutes ago. It lasted all of 3 minutes but it was the heaviest rain I have ever seen in my life! The garden was flooded in a few seconds with water cascading off the house. There was even a flash of lightning during it but no thunder sadly. I had heard a few close sferics before the squall began but no thunder from any of them. It was a really great squall anyway and will be a treat for anyone in its ppppath.

It was some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen. Nearly all roads were flooding!

That must be the same system which passed through here about 3:15pm. I haven't seen rain that heavy for a long time. The streets briefly turned into rivers.

...and just like that the clouds have parted to reveal daylight once more. Its been quite a treat today watching the progression of a frontal system from start to finish, not too often this happens visually.

No T&L for here but just got very wild out there with torrential rain and really strong winds. Lasted about 10-15 minutes and its back to traditional moderate rain now.

Currently have torrential rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Very impressive in what has been a good summer so far for storms in my area.

With all the talk about the Squall line which is still keeping its act together, here is an image from my Davis weather station as it went through earlier today. Can you guess the time at which the squall passed, clues to this being Air Pressure kick, Temperature drop and Rainfall rate.

Still it continues its journey Northwards and Eastwards

And here again is how the Squall line or the LEWPy thing looked nearer its early stages as it hurtled through Newbury, Berkshire area.

Here's to more of the same, some day soon. drinks.gif

Should this sort of image be reserved for autumn?!

You would certainly think so, must be thankful it wasn't another Fastnet storm though.
