After a mostly sunny week, I await the amber warning of heavy prolonged rain here tomorrow... A while since we had a proper drenching.

Overcast most of the day and became very humid reaching 15c in the middle of the afternoon. Grass fields have all put on a bit of new growth in the last few days but its now heavy rain this evening and 8c. Finished up a lot of outside jobs today and after feeding cattle tomorrow will come inside to do paperwork and then a few jobs we have lined up in the steading.

I know it's early doors and all but, if you haven't seen it across in the MT, there are some fairly stonking heights progged for the Arctic in the medium term.

Well what, directly, does this mean for us? A continuation of the southerly tracking jet bringing generally cool and unsettled weather with the strong possibility of slightly more interesting northerly incursions when we do get a bit of amplification in the slighty longer term. In the even longer term, however, a strong positive heights anomaly to our north is precisely what we're looking for to develop over the winter. If this favourable blocking pattern could become established and a recurring theme over the next few months then who knows what we could be looking at in a month or two. For the moment, though, just remember a brolly when you go outside tomorrow.

Heavy, constant rain since 18.30 last night. Doesn't take much rain for this place to turn to sheer mud, so not looking forward to going out there.

Rain had stopped by the time I drove to work this morning. However, rivers and burns in full spate with lots of surface runoff from fields making little streams on the back roads.

Some damage around. Pics here from the BBC.

No sign of any real damage about here but some very heavy rainfall last night. My own rain gauge overflowed [at 55mms] so checked the local Met station at Invergowrie. They had 23 mms in the evening yesterday followed by 50.6 mms today. Just a little light and patchy rain here now which is just as well.

I fairly frequently drive through Dura Den when heading to Leven and given the topography I am not surprised at what happened with last nights rain. There is nowhere for it to go.That householder must have had some shock.

Lots of flooding in Angus and Perthshire too

Quite steady rain here just now.It has left my back garden underwater again. I suppose Fridays deluge has left the ground waterlogged. Youngest ones football off this morning due to Council cancelling all matches today because of the lying water.

9.5C currently.

It has now got quite heavy again. Was this forecast and will it last?

Seems a bit tetchy on some threads today - October nerves before the main Winter event?

Been a grey and occasionally wet day here today. I know I have some soggy leaves to collect, but been putting it off. lazy.gif

It's been a bit of change from last weekends continuous High Pressure, other side of the Autumnal coin the colder and greyer stuff, without the Atlantic to push systems through.

Certainly a lot colder. Welcome back Mr 528...

post-7292-0-83057300-1350203785_thumb.pn

NMM shows the pocket of colder air flirting with the North East of the country, 850hpa temps are at best marginal. NAE 00z run restricts snow showers to a band in the North Sea a few hundred miles east of Aberdeen.

As with any potential snow event will be interesting to keep an eye on the radar nearer the time to see what actually comes through, also what how 12z runs this afternoon view the cold pool.

In regular charts this appears as the blink and you would miss it tinge of blue stuff among the green below that elongated Scandi block.

With reference to Lorenzo"s post above it has certainly turned cooler today 4c first thing and currently 8c with some sharp showers falling from wintry looking cloud coming in on a NE wind off the Firth. A reminder that winter is getting closer.Trees begining to look very colourful and will probably get better if we get a couple of air frosts this week. Currently -0.3c on the summit of Cairngorm.

After having the cloudy, dark and grey atlantic side of October for a couple of days, today has had a little more in the way of some sunshine and pockets of blue skies. Temperatures earlier dropped to 7C and there was some rain overnight. Now 10C and should be dry from now on with most of the showers further east. Later tonight there could be a return to crisp and chilly side of October that we had just a few days ago but the rest of next week looks unsettled with some wet weather at times. It's nice to see that wintry feel returning to northern parts of country and hopefully there'll be the first reports of snowfall to come with it. I can only dream of October snowfall whereas in the northern isles, highlands and grampian region October wintryness is like a ritual in the annual weather calendar! laugh.png

Look out NL:

12101506_1412.gif

Not really cold enough at the upper levels for anything particularly notable, some sleetiness towards the northeast at best in heavier bursts but for most it'll be either dry with dewpoints around 0C or showery with dewpoints just above 0C at the coasts:
